The rumored Apple Pencil feature could be a game changer for iPad accessories

Future versions of the Apple Pencil could be upgraded with Apple's handy Find My technology.

According to a recent patent application unearthed by Patently Apple, the proposed Apple Pencil upgrade incorporates an acoustic resonator to alert the user.

Since the stylus design does not account for a speaker, Apple would place the resonator on top of the Pencil, under the cap that houses the haptic module.

According to the patent: "The drive signal generated by the haptic module can be transmitted to the acoustic resonator through a path of material that mechanically couples the acoustic resonator to the haptic module."

This allows the pencil to emit sound and vibrate when the user needs to locate the pencil.

The Apple Pencil already has Bluetooth, which will be used to determine proximity; there do not appear to be any plans to include the same ultra-wideband technology used in AirTags in the Pencil.

The addition of Find My to the Apple Pencil seems like a clear win. The sleek, bright white stylus is a must-have accessory for the iPad, but it is small and easy to lose. And at $130 a piece (2nd generation model), it's not a cheap purchase. And if you have more than one iPad, it stands to reason that you would want to keep track of them. It would also further differentiate Apple from the best alternatives to the Apple pencil.

Using Find My on the Apple pencil reportedly works just as well as using it on other Apple gadgets.

Of course, the usual caveat applies that since this is a patent application, there is no guarantee that it will become an actual product. Furthermore, there have been Apple Pencil applications in the past (no pun intended), but they have yet to amount to anything significant.

In 2021, an uncovered Apple patent suggested that the Pencil could introduce interchangeable functional tip modules and new sensors. Another patent suggested that an optical sensor system could be added to the tip of the Apple Pencil, allowing it to "pull" colors from certain objects and use them to color in apps.

Both of these features are cool, but we contend that the addition of "Find My" to the Apple Pencil would be even more welcomed by users: if the Apple Pencil falls out of a bag or rolls under furniture, a quick The ability to quickly locate the Apple Pencil if it falls out of a bag or under furniture is the kind of practical problem that should be addressed as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if your Apple Pencil does not work, here is a breakdown of the most likely causes.
