OnePlus12 leak reveals Monster 5,400mAh battery, 100W charging and big camera upgrade

A major spec leak of the OnePlus 12, courtesy of OnLeaks and Smartprix, revealed some details we expected, as well as some major upgrades that may be coming to the phone's camera and battery life.

It appears that OnePlus will add a very large 5,400 mAh battery to the OnePlus 12, surpassing the usual 5,000 mAh battery found in the OnePlus 11 and other flagship Android phones.

To power this battery, OnLeaks and Smartprix say we can expect 100W charging and 50W wireless charging like the OnePlus 11. This is because due to voltage differences, OnePlus purchasers in the US had lower wattage and slower speeds than in other countries for OnePlus models prior to the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 10 Pro.

As for the cameras, the OnePlus 12 is said to offer three rear sensors again, tweaked with the help of partner camera maker Hasselblad. These cameras are likely to be a 50MP main, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 64MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom; the 50MP ultrawide camera is a resolution upgrade from the OnePlus 11's 48MP sensor, while the main camera is identical. But it is the telephoto camera that is most interesting here.

The 64MP resolution and 3x zoom are much better than the 2x zoom on the OnePlus 11's 32MP sensor and comparable to what the Galaxy S23 and iPhone 14 Pro offer. However, it is not as good as the 10x zoom on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, nor will it be as good as the 6x zoom rumored to be available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max later this year. Considering the OnePlus 12's alleged design, which suggested that the telephoto camera uses a periscope system for more powerful zoom, it is odd that the rumored magnification on the next OnePlus flagship is so low.

The leak also suggests that the OnePlus 12 will have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip used in most flagship Android phones this year. Add to that up to 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, and it will run Android 14 in the form of OxygenOS 14, the leak continues.

Meanwhile, the screen will likely be a 6.7-inch 2K panel with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, just like the OnePlus 11. It will also feature a fingerprint sensor under the screen and an alert slider on the side rail, as most OnePlus phones offer.

Elsewhere in the world of smartphone leaks, tipster Max Jambor has confirmed that the OnePlus 12 will be the first phone from Apple and Google's next-generation rivals (iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 series) and will most likely launch in January, after the launch of Samsung's Galaxy S24 and before Samsung releases the Galaxy S24.

We had previously heard of a China-only launch in December, which fits OnePlus' launch pattern over the past few years. It's unfortunate that there seems to be a big gap between the phone's debut and when it's actually available for purchase (or for us to review and tell you how good or bad it is). But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't take much to wait.

If January sounds too far away for you, remember that the OnePlus Open foldable phone could debut next month.
