AirPlay support could come to your Tesla — here's what we know

The dream of casting iPhone screens to Tesla Entertainment Screens may soon become a reality after AirPlay code was discovered in the updated Tesla iOS app. [This code was discovered by Tesla App Updates (iOS) on Twitter (@Tesla_App_iOS) after decompiling the latest version of the iOS Tesla app and finding the "allowsAirPlayForMediaPlayback" string Discovered by.

AirPlay allows users to wirelessly stream audio, video, photos, and other content from Apple devices to larger-screened or connected devices. The addition of AirPlay to Tesla would improve the current system where users use Bluetooth to play their music while driving.

In the past, Tesla founder Elon Musk has not ruled out the ability to cast entertainment to in-car entertainment screens in Tesla vehicles. However, he claims that even without the lossless streaming that AirPlay enables, the current system used in EVs sounds "incredible."

Tesla passengers can already launch entertainment apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu, and even play games while the EV is parked. However, the adoption of AirPlay would be a major step forward in improving the lives of iPhone users while controlling the overall passenger user experience.

In addition to streaming media, AirPlay will allow users to view photos, mirror iPhone, iPad, and Mac screens, and take advantage of lossless streaming via WiFi Direct Streaming.

However, this is not the same as adding CarPlay to Tesla; CarPlay is another much-requested feature that would allow more iPhone apps and navigation to be integrated into electric cars.

At last year's WWDC, Apple revealed that 98% of cars in the U.S. have CarPlay integrated and that 79% of consumers would not purchase a car without CarPlay integration. Perhaps Tesla needs to listen to the obvious willingness of car buyers and consider working on CarPlay support next.
