ChatGPT and Bing now generate an AI generated shopping guide for you

Microsoft has launched AI-generated shopping tools for Bing search results and the Edge browser. These tools include buying guides for popular categories, summarized reviews, and a price comparison tool available to all US users starting today, June 29.

For the Buying Guide, Bing search results provide product suggestions and display a comparison chart with specifications for each product. The shopping tool will appear in Bing Chat as well as be accessible from the Edge sidebar. The latter option will begin rolling out worldwide outside the US today.

The review summary leverages the power of ChatGPT's conversational AI to allow users to dig into a product and see what customers and popular reviewers are saying about it on other websites.

"Our goal is to bring more joy to shopping, from initial inspiration to an exciting unboxing experience, by simplifying the process and giving you confidence that you are getting the right item at the right price," Microsoft wrote in a blog post announcing the feature in a blog post announcing the feature.

"Microsoft Shopping is already a tool across Bing, Edge, Microsoft Start, and Outlook that helps you save time and money. In fact, Microsoft Edge has provided $3.7 billion in savings to shoppers worldwide over the last year with built-in shopping features such as coupons, cash back, price history, and price comparisons.

Price Match is potentially the most useful of the new tools. It monitors the price of an item even after you have purchased it. And if there is a discount or sale, the AI will help the retailer request a match.

"Price comparison and price history are built-in browser features that help ensure you're buying at the right place and time, and Edge helps automatically apply coupons and cash back when shopping online.

This is a feature that has not been launched today, but Microsoft has said it will roll out soon in the U.S.

AI recognizes when a potential shopper is about to make a purchase from a search query. So, typing "What do you need for college?" on Bing.com might result in a tailor-made buying guide that returns suggestions for the best noise-canceling headphones for distraction-free study time.

The results will list the specs and prices of various headphones, but when asked, Bing Chat will suggest what to consider when buying headphones. These include sound quality, fit, and device compatibility. Once you have decided on the headphones you like, you can ask Bing Chat to summarize what others and review sites have to say about them. Microsoft believes that part of the appeal is that you don't have to leave the Bing Chat page or the Edge sidebar.

ChatGPT was integrated into Bing earlier this year (and became Bing Chat) to present search results in a more conversational tone. The AI chatbot was initially locked behind a waiting list until Microsoft opened access to those who wanted it in May; a step-by-step guide to using Bing with ChatGPT is here.
