The Google Pixel Fold is the first foldable that you can repair yourself.

Official replacements for key parts of the Google Pixel Fold will be available online, Google confirmed to 9to5Google.

Google explains that it is working with gadget repair experts and spare parts suppliers at iFixit to provide "genuine spare parts" and repair guides, including battery and inner/outer screen replacements.

This is especially noteworthy because the Pixel Fold is theoretically the first foldable to be able to repair itself since its launch. Other foldable devices, such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4, require the usual in-store and mail-in repair services that many of us are already familiar with.

Google partnered with iFixit for the first time last year to provide replacement parts for the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series and some older models. Samsung has also partnered with iFixit, but currently does not sell parts for phones newer than the 2021 Galaxy S21 series, nor does it sell any folding parts that Samsung has ever manufactured.

iFixit does not yet have any parts for the Pixel Fold, which is not surprising given that the phone was just officially launched on June 28. Google's statement does not mention a timeline for the introduction of parts, but we expect Pixel Fold parts to be added to the storefront in the very near future.

Given that the Pixel Fold's display was just found to be too easily damaged, the fact that official Google parts for the Pixel Fold can be purchased is good news. All foldable phones are more fragile than regular slate-style phones, suggesting that other foldable phone manufacturers should follow Google's example.

But given how difficult it is to repair modern smartphones, especially folding phones, it is only fitting that Google offer a regular repair option for most of us. For users who are used to opening their phones and for those who work in private repair shops, having genuine parts in an easily accessible location would make it easier to repair the Pixel Fold and give Pixel Fold owners more options when it comes to getting their phones repaired.

The Google Pixel Fold had already topped the best folding phone guide, beating the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in several areas. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and other folding phones to be released later this year will undoubtedly bring interesting upgrades for Google, but the enhanced repairability may be a key point in favor of the Pixel Fold to maintain its #1 position Pixel Fold could be a key point in its favor to maintain its No. 1 position.
