Apple Vision Pro will change the way you watch movies — how do you do it here

When Apple unveiled the Apple Vision Pro, one of its promises was to change the way we watch movies; from its announcement at WWDC to the hands-on demos that followed, the Vision Pro was advertised as being able to transform any room into a movie theater.

One of the ways Vision Pro does this is through cinema environment. Cinema Environments. With the turn of a dial on the Vision Pro, you can, in Apple's words, "turn your room into a personal movie theater with Cinema Environment."

But this feature doesn't just put you inside a personal movie theater, it also takes you to incredible, otherworldly places. Apple's announcement introduced Mount Hood as one of the Cinematic Environments that can be enjoyed while watching a movie. And it turns out that it is not the only option.

According to FlatpanelsHD, there are a total of 13 virtual cinematic environments to choose from when using Vision Pro. These include as yet unidentified locations such as unidentified beaches, Haleakala volcano, Earth's moon, and of course Mount Hood.

Even without the addition of these breathtaking vistas in the background, the viewing experience with the Apple Vision Pro should be incredibly immersive. The screen inside Apple's VR headset simulates a 100-foot-wide movie screen directly in front of your face.

And of course, the Vision Pro's micro OLED display offers 4K resolution and 64 times the pixel density of an iPhone, all at postage stamp size. In addition, the Vision Pro's audio pods for spaced audio are designed to provide immersive sound that can be fine-tuned to your personal preferences with Apple's personalized spaced audio.

Several of us at Tom'sGuide have seen this in action; in a hands-on review of Apple Vision Pro, editor-in-chief Mark Spoonauer wrote about the experience in Avatar: The Water Path. Not only was the display and audio pods a great experience together, but the Vision Pro's support for 3D video made it even more immersive.

I have yet to watch a movie in the Vision Pro's cinema environment, but I can vouch for the benefits of watching movies in VR; I watched "Cocaine Bear" in VR on the Meta Quest 2 and it replicated the cinema experience - at least visually. I still don't see it replacing movie theaters or the best TVs. But I wouldn't be surprised if cinema environment is one of Vision Pro's best features at launch.
