7 best Movies like the Lord of the Rings on Max, Hulu and Disney Plus

Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy was a defining moment for the fantasy genre on the big screen. The director poured his heart and soul into adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novels, and the three films debuted to overwhelming critical acclaim and became the blockbuster hits that defined the early 2000s. Hit fantasy shows like "Game of Thrones" and "The Witcher" can trace at least part of their DNA to Jackson's success with "The Lord of the Rings. [If you're looking for more films like "The Lord of the Rings," look no further. We've scoured the vast landscape of cinematic history (not to mention the immortal land of the best streaming services) to compile an epic fantasy adventure film that Tolkien fans should love.

These films tell a variety of stories, from hilarious heists through time and space to centuries-old Arthurian legends brought to life in spectacular fashion. Without further ado, here are the seven best "Lord of the Rings"-like movies and where you can stream them right now.

Let's start with Peter Jackson's blockbuster. The iconic giant ape returns in 2005 to reveal himself in his hometown of Skull Island. An overly ambitious film crew, including screenwriter Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) and director Carl Denham (Jack Black), embark on the mysterious Skull Island to make the blockbuster of a lifetime, but instead come face-to-face with a host of deadly flora and fauna. Prehistoric dinosaurs call the island home, as do 25-foot-tall gorillas.

The crew manages to capture King Kong and drag him back to New York. Fans of "The Lord of the Rings" may notice that the giant ape's face is eerily familiar. That's because Jackson brought back Gollum actor Andy Serkis to handle King Kong's motion capture. (Serkis also has a cameo as Lumpy, the ship's cook.)

Jackson's take on King Kong may not be to everyone's taste as Tolkien's, but its special effects and large sets are still a feast for the eyes a decade and a half later.

You may already be familiar with the story of King Arthur, but Charlie Hunnam's portrayal of the legendary English ruler breathes new life into the legend.

Young Arthur, his parents murdered, is deprived of his throne by his tyrannical uncle Vortigern (Jude Law). Deprived of his birthright and unaware of his lineage, Arthur grows up as an exile in the back alleys of London, scraping by as best he can. When Vortigern discovers the legendary Excalibur stuck in stone, he has all the men in town gather to retrieve it.

Arthur, of course, is the only one who can remove it, and he then vows to become the legendary warrior and leader he is destined to be. To overthrow Vortigern's reign of terror and continue his father's legacy, Arthur gathers the toughest warriors in the land, who will later become Knights of the Round Table.

Tolkien was friends with C.S. Lewis, who wrote the "Chronicles of Narnia" series, and both men drew inspiration for their fantasy epics from Norse mythology and religious iconography. So it would be a shame not to feature the "Chronicles of Narnia" series: it would be a shame not to include "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" in this list.

The first film in the Chronicles of Narnia trilogy features the Pevensie siblings. The Pevensie siblings are four children who are forced to flee their home during the Blitz and take refuge with their family in the countryside. Just as Frodo and Sam must abandon their peaceful lives in the Shire, the Pevensie children are also drawn into a fantastic new world besieged by evil forces. In their new home, they stumble upon a wardrobe that serves as a gateway to the once-peaceful world of Narnia, which suffers from an eternal winter brought on by an evil white witch (Tilda Swinton).

The sequels, "Prince Caspian" and "The Voyage of Dawn Treader," are also worth a look, if a bit darker. But there is a certain magic to the original's spectacular sets and colorful talking animals that "Lord of the Rings" fans will instantly recognize.

The "Green Knight" of Arthurian legend may not be as famous as the story of Excalibur, but without it there would be no "Lord of the Rings" in the first place. Tolkien's passion for the epic, in which the hero Sir Gawain encounters a variety of supernatural creatures, led to the creation of Middle-earth and the diverse races that inhabit it.

Dev Patel plays Gawain, King Arthur's nephew, a headstrong character who, despite sitting at the right side of the king at the round table, has yet to earn a true knighthood, not knowing what story to tell as proof of his valor. When the super-sized green knight crashes the king's New Year's Eve feast and challenges the other knights to a contest of strength, Gawain sees his chance to finally make a name for himself and takes it on.

To fulfill his promise within a year, Gawain sets out on a hellish crusade to find the Green Chapel where the Green Knight resides.

If you love the massive, awe-inspiring battle scenes of "The Lord of the Rings," you should definitely add "Kingdom of Heaven" to your watch list. Directed by Ridley Scott of "Alien" and "Blade Runner" fame, this historical drama overlaps with "The Lord of the Rings" in several ways. Both feature seemingly impossible adventures, epic war scenes on a cinematic scale, and Orlando Bloom in the lead role.

"Kingdom of Heaven" takes place during the medieval Crusades, when 200 years of religious warfare between Christians and Muslims shaped the world we live in today. Balian, a French blacksmith who has lost his wife and child, becomes a crusader soldier alongside his long-lost father.

Through his journey to the Holy Land, he hopes to find salvation and learn the true meaning of knighthood. In reality, however, he is thrust into a long smoldering political dilemma and must defend besieged Jerusalem from impossible odds.

Directed by Ron Howard and produced by Star Wars creator George Lucas, this 80s fantasy film has evolved into a perennially beloved cult classic. Like "The Lord of the Rings," the unlikely protagonist, the hero Willow, played by Warwick Davis, is drawn into an epic adventure in which the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Willow, a young farmer and aspiring sorcerer, teams up with mercenary Mad Martigan (Val Kilmer) to protect a young princess from the clutches of an evil queen. It's a classic tale of good versus evil, but its imaginative fantasy setting and colorful characters have captivated fans for decades. Last year, Disney Plus released a remake of Willow.

Of the films on this list, "Time Bandits" is definitely more comedy than fantasy. But can we honestly expect more than a riot from this film, helmed by former Python Terry Gilliam? Featuring satirical, high-concept storytelling, the film recalls the epic feel of the "Lord of the Rings" movies through fantastic creatures and stunning set pieces.

Kevin (Craig Warnock), an eccentric boy, discovers that the walls of his bedroom lead to a portal when six small treasure hunters arrive by chance one night. The motley crew travels through time in search of riches, but ends up on the run after stealing a map and angering the bad guy, the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson). Kevin joins them on a fantastic voyage through time and space, plundering treasures from such historical figures as Napoleon (Ian Holm) and Agamemnon (Sean Connery).

Several other Monty Python veterans make cameo appearances. John Cleese plays the overly cheerful Robin Hood, leading a group of not-so-hilarious men. Meanwhile, Michael Palin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gilliam, plays a young man in love with a timeless love interest.
