Windows11 is getting a big Upgrade for multitasking — What you Need to Know

Microsoft is working on a Windows 11 update to improve the multi-monitor experience. The company released Windows 11 Build 25915 to Canary Channel Insiders last week. One of the biggest updates is that Windows 11 will automatically adjust the refresh rate of multiple monitors based on what is being displayed on each screen. The update in question has the potential to reduce the strain on the GPU when using two or more monitors that are optimized.

"We have improved the refresh rate logic to allow different refresh rates on different monitors depending on each monitor's refresh rate and the content being displayed on the screen," Microsoft said on its Windows Insider blog." This will be most useful for refresh rate-dependent multitasking, such as playing a game and watching a video at the same time."

The Vertex also added that the refresh rate logic has been "improved to enable different refresh rates on different monitors.

As The Verge points out, running multiple monitors that support high refresh rates can increase GPU power consumption. For example, if you are playing a game at 144 Hz on one monitor and watching a 30 Hz video on another monitor, the GPU will try to match the higher refresh rate on both monitors. However, with the new update, the monitors will now run at different refresh rates depending on what is being displayed, potentially reducing the strain on the graphics card.

In addition, this Insider build also includes a Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) update for laptops. Similar to the multi-monitor update, this feature keeps the display refresh rate low to conserve power when battery saver mode is enabled. This may help the best Windows laptops last even longer.

This update is currently only available to Canary Channel Insiders. Therefore, it is not known when or if this update will be rolled out or released to the general public. However, given its usefulness, we would be surprised if Microsoft shelves this feature. Nevertheless, it is best to be patient, as this update may not be released for several months yet.

We will keep you updated on this and other important updates to Windows 11. Please stay tuned.
