Amazon Update Tips PS5Pro is real — here's what we know

The PS5 Pro rumors are showing no signs of quieting down, with various industry insiders testifying that Sony is working on a mid-generation refresh of its current flagship console. But we may have the biggest hint yet that the PS5 Pro is the real deal: Amazon.

The online retail giant recently updated its PS5 console listing page in the UK, now showing it as a "PlayStation 5 Standard Console." Thanks to Wayback Machine, a free Internet archive service, we can see that as of May of this year, the console was simply listed as "PlayStation 5 Console". Is this change a subtle hint that retailers need to distinguish the current console from the "standard" version, since the PS5 Pro is now available?

Or perhaps this is a nod to the equally rumored PS5 Slim console. Some sources have suggested that Sony will release a slimmed-down PS5 model later this year, and it is quite possible that Amazon got a head start and updated its listing page a bit early. If a PS5 Slim release is indeed imminent, we can expect an official announcement within the next few months.

Of course, this update may simply be Amazon's way of clearly distinguishing between the regular PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. However, both versions of the console have been sold since its launch in November 2020, and Amazon only recently added the "Standard Console" tag. This tag is most likely an indication of something in the future. However, we cannot completely rule out the possibility that the retailer is simply trying to clean up customer confusion and prevent shoppers from purchasing the wrong version of the PS5 this holiday season.

Even with this potentially promising hint from Amazon, so far the PS5 Pro remains unconfirmed; the PS5 Pro is believed to be developed as a bridge between the PS5 and Sony's next game console (commonly referred to as the PS6), on top of the regular PS5 base, It is expected to feature refreshed internal components, allowing for improved performance and visuals.

Looking at the previous generation, the PS4 Pro was released in 2016, three years after the launch of the regular PS4 in 2013. If Sony follows the same pattern, the PS5 Pro will be officially announced in the near future. So perhaps this update to Amazon's listing page is a sign that retailers are preparing for the upcoming refresh of the PS5 lineup. However, until we get more concrete information from Sony itself regarding the PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim, it's best to take everything with a grain of salt. This Amazon update is not a commitment to new PlayStation hardware.

On the other hand, if you're looking to pick up a PS5 right now, the PS5 has just received its first significant discount in the UK as part of PlayStation's ongoing summer sale. While similar discounts have not yet been offered in the U.S., the £75 off sale may be another hint that new PS5 hardware is on the way, as Sony may be trying to move surplus stock of its standard console before announcing a new lineup.
