Apple Admits Apple Watch Battery-Draining Bug - Promises Fix Coming

If you've noticed your Apple Watch battery draining a bit faster after updating to watchOS 10.1, you're not alone. apple has confirmed that there is a bug that affects battery life on several Apple Watch models, but a fix versions will be released.

The news comes from an internal memo shared with Apple authorized service providers over the weekend (via MacRumors). Apparently a fix is in the works and will be distributed as part of a future software update. Unfortunately, no details are known as to when the fix will be distributed or how widespread the problem is.

Various complaints about battery drain have been received on the MacRumors forum, Apple Support Community, Reddit, and Twitter/X over the past few weeks. Affected devices include the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, but older watches like the Apple Watch 4 also appear to be affected.

What they all have in common is that the battery drains much faster than it should. In many cases, they run out of 100% to completely in a matter of hours.

This is not the first time watchOS 10 has caused battery issues recently. Last month Apple confirmed that users could suffer from "increased power consumption" if the wrong combination of beta software was used.

It seemed to affect users who have either an iPhone or an Apple Watch running on the beta software. Essentially, if a device running watchOS 10.1 beta or iOS 17.1 beta was paired with an opposite device running public software, there was a risk of a significant reduction in battery life.

According to MacRumors, the iOS 17.1 release notes claim to have fixed the issue of increased power consumption, particularly for watchOS 10.1 devices paired with iOS 17. Unfortunately, this issue has not actually been fixed.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the next watchOS 10.1.1 update, otherwise we may have to wait for watchOS 10.2, which does not appear until next month.
