5 new Netflix movies over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes

This month has been a quiet month in terms of new Netflix movies, but that's not to say there aren't still some fresh, November 2023 additions that you might want to add to your watch list.

Rather excitingly, two of the most acclaimed movies coming to Netflix this month are entirely new original films, flanked by slightly older popular films that are still worth watching. From a modern classic about the birth of a hugely popular social media website (hint: it's not the website that Elon Musk bizarrely renamed earlier this year) to a tense drama about a young jazz drummer and the uncompromising mentor who pushes him to his limits, This month of new movies on Netflix isn't the biggest in terms of quantity, but it's strong in terms of quality.

All of the picks in this roundup deserve a spot on our list of the best Netflix movies, with excellent scores of over 90% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. While not a guarantee of quality, the high scores are an indication that most critics consider these films worth seeing.

They are often cited not only as the best movie of the year of release, but also as one of the most important films of the entire 21st century. The Social Network is a biographical drama about the creation of Facebook and the subsequent fallout of its co-founders, Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield). [David Fincher's "The Social Network" begins at Harvard University in 2003 and tells the story of how two sophomores built a website from their dorm room that became the center of the Internet for millions of people in the 2010s. Thanks to Aaron Sorkin's trademark laser-sharp screenplay, the real-life drama is brought to life beautifully. The filmmaking by Fincher is flawless, and the acting is perfect.

You wouldn't expect a movie about a jazz drummer trying to get into the top studio band at a prestigious New York music school to get your adrenaline flowing more than most action thrillers, but "Whiplash" is truly " Lightning in a Bottle." Directed by Damian Chazelle, who would shoot "La La Land" a few years later, "Whiplash" is a relentlessly compelling drama about a teacher who goes too far with the nature of his obsession.

Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is desperate to impress when he is offered a chance to play in the top-level studio band at New York's (fictional) Shaffer Conservatory of Music. However, his audition turns into a nightmare when the band's conductor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), turns out to be not only strict about his standards, but downright abusive toward his students. However, Andrew pushes himself to the limit in his single-minded desire for Fletcher's approval.

David Fincher, the acclaimed director of "Seven," "Fight Club," and "Gone Girl," returns to the thriller genre. Given his talent, it is no surprise that this new Netflix original is generating a lot of buzz ahead of its streaming release on Friday, November 10. Fincher's 2020 film for streaming, "Mank," was met with mixed reviews, but "The Killer" looks to be a full-fledged return with all the traits one would expect from a Fincher film.

In "The Killer," Michael Fassbender plays an emotionless and extremely methodical hit man. Forced to fight his employer, he must contend with his inner demons as his objectives become more complex. Meanwhile, he insists that the mission is not personal. Early reviews have described it as a clever and stylish thriller that will keep you hooked until the credits roll. Moreover, with music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, there is no doubt that the score is excellent.

"Drag Me to Hell" is a cautionary tale in horror film form. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars a bank loan officer named Christine Brown (Allison Lohman), a woman who is a victim of a murder she is accused of having committed. In response, the woman places a curse on Christine, promising that after three days of suffering, she will be dragged to hell for eternity.

At first Christine denies the woman's words, but she is plagued by eerie phenomena throughout her waking hours and begins to fear that the curse is real. As the moment of Christine's descent into the depths of hell grows ever closer, the two confide in her boyfriend and try to find a way to break the curse. Far from the most terrifying horror film, "Drag Me to Hell" is devilishly fun and has a haunting December ending.
