Android 14 Upgrade Bricks Some Google Pixel Devices - What You Need to Know

Some Google Pixel owners are having problems with Android 14, especially those who have multiple profiles on their devices. Simply put, the device crashes when you try to upgrade, potentially causing a number of problems. Fortunately, Google has confirmed that a fix is available.

Initially, the issue appeared to primarily affect Pixel 6 owners, but there are reports that Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold are affected as well. The only real similarity is that it is happening to phones with multiple profiles (including guest and child users). This is different from having multiple Google accounts on a phone, which does not seem to trigger the bug.

The main issue users are experiencing seems to be being locked out of device storage or being asked to reboot the device with a pop-up that says "Factory data reset". Apparently, accepting this message will perform a factory reset and erase all data that has not been backed up.

The good news is that Google is working to resolve this issue and has already released a Google Play system update to "prevent this issue from being triggered on additional devices". You can check if this update is available by going to Settings > Security and Privacy > System and Updates > Google Play System Update.

If you are already suffering from this issue and cannot access your device's storage, a fix is still on the way. Google claims that a system update will fix the problem and that there is no need to wipe the phone and restore it from factory settings. Unfortunately, this is not very positive news for those with devices stuck in a reboot loop. Google claims that it is "investigating ways in which it might be possible to restore some data."

This means that those with problems that cannot be resolved by updating Google Play services will just have to sit tight and wait for a fix. It sucks, but there isn't much anyone other than Google developers can do about it right now.

If anything, this issue serves to underscore the importance of backing up your data, especially before major software upgrades. Regardless of whether you are affected or not, it is good practice to regularly back up your devices. If you haven't already, check out our guide to cloud backup services.
