One of Hollywood's most popular movie stars, Ryan Reynolds is known for his quick wit and sarcastic edge, making him a natural for big-budget comedies. Over the years, however, he has extended his skills to other genres, from superhero blockbusters to suspense dramas.

It's tough to go toe-to-toe with rom-com royalty like Sandra Bullock, but Reynolds was the actress' counterpart in this 2009 odd-couple favorite. When her visa expires and she is about to be deported back to her native Canada, Margaret tricks Andrew into marrying her for a green card, promising him a lavish editorial promotion in return.

In an effort to deceive the immigration authorities, the deceptive duo also pretend to be lovers during a hijinks-filled trip to Andrew's hometown of Sitka, Alaska, while also trying to fool his family (Craig T. Nelson, Mary Steenbergen, and the wonderful Betty White), he manages to fool them. One look at the spiky, suggestive chemistry between the two leads and you'll see why everyone was so easily fooled.

With his superhero good looks and perfect comedic timing, Ryan Reynolds is used to being likable. But in this 2009 indie drama, he deftly uses those two traits to create a love triangle between a married amusement park technician, Em (Kristen Stewart), a younger amusement park employee, and James (Jesse Eisenberg), a sweet and dorky college grad she begins to fall for, against type. plays against type.

Mike Connell, played by Reynolds, regales the youngsters on staff with tales of jam sessions with Lou Reed, but it is clear that his grandiose bragging only masks deep-seated insecurities. The one-location premise means that Reynolds is with Paul in every tense, claustrophobic moment, whether he is frantically negotiating with his kidnappers on a rapidly dying phone call or discovering a live snake trapped inside a coffin. Although the physical space available is limited, Reynolds expresses fear and delirium in spades.

Reynolds plays Curtis and Ben Mendelsohn plays Jerry in this 2015 freewheeling road movie from writing and directing team Anna Borden and Ryan Fleck. The luck-testing duo encounters various racetracks, honky-tonks, casinos, and pool halls on their journey down the Mississippi River, as well as the fragility of friendship, the tangles of addiction, and the loneliness of a life easily swept away.
