Apple Doubles Down on Creepiness with 'Scary Fast' M3 Mac Event

When Apple sent out invitations for the "Scary Fast" event, it was simply a way to point out that the new Macs with M3... Yes, it was supposed to be a cute Halloween-themed way of pointing out that it was fast.

However, it seems that Apple doubled down on the Halloween theme by apparently sending gift boxes to tech influencers like Lamarr Wilson, who will be producing content at the event. The gift box includes a pair of AirPods Max and a bunch of "sweet and spooky" treats to complement the Halloween "candy" that Apple plans to unveil on October 30.

"It's almost Halloween, and Apple has some candy for you," the letter included in the box reads.

"On the evening of October 30, we will be announcing something special and inviting you to an online watch party.

"To make the viewing experience a little more 'spatial,' we hope you will enjoy immersive listening with AirPods Max along with some sweet and spooky treats."

Personally, I don't recall the company ever leaning toward such a holiday-themed gimmick, and it doesn't feel at all Apple-like. It remains to be seen if the event itself is horror-themed, or if it's word-of-mouth marketing to boost publicity for the Mac-focused event (which will almost certainly draw less attention than last month's iPhone 15 unveiling).

Although Apple has not explicitly said so, this will likely be a Mac-focused event. In addition to leaked information, Apple's own teaser image has switched to a Mac Finder icon.

This means that Apple's third-generation computer processor, the M3 chip, is finally ready for its unveiling, and as the tagline "Scary Fast" suggests, Apple has reason to believe that it will be a big leap in performance from the already powerful M2. With a 3-nanometer manufacturing process, it is certainly possible.

But what kind of product will the M3 be in, Bloomberg's well-connected reporter Mark Gurman believes, a refreshed 24-inch iMac? Since the colorful range is currently powered by the M1 and is over two years old, it makes sense that it would appear alongside new versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Of particular interest is the latter, which suggests that Apple will release an M3 Pro or M3 Max chip alongside the basic M3. This would be a change in strategy from the M1 and M2 rollouts.

Less exciting, but perhaps also new Magic Keyboard, trackpad, and mouse.

These are the kind of products that are being nailed down, and Gurman warns the audience not to expect a 13-inch MacBook Pro with M3 on Monday. And while there has been no recent news of a Mac mini with M3, it would be hard to completely rule it out, as one was spotted being tested just a few months ago...
