USB-C Magic Mouse expected to be announced at Apple event, but port location unknown

Apple's "Scary Fast" event is just days away. But that's not all: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports this week that Apple will unveil new versions of its Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad for Macs with USB-C ports.

The October Apple event is scheduled to begin on October 30 at 5:00 PM (8:00 PM GMT). This showcase will be completely virtual, unlike the in-person event in September, when the new iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 models were announced.

Garman expects Apple to show off revamped accessories, along with new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros and updated iMacs with the "Festival of Terror" M3 chip.

"As part of a broader shift to the USB-C connector, the company will likely roll out updated versions of accessories, including trackpads, mice, and keyboards, ditching the old Lightning port," he said. [When it comes to charging cables, Apple has long been a heretic, sticking to its own Lightning cable even as other tech companies have moved to more generic charging standards. But even Apple cannot avoid the winds of change forever. The company has officially announced that future iPhones, starting with the iPhone 15, will feature a USB-C port, partly because it was forced into its hand by new EU regulations requiring all handset manufacturers to adopt a USB-C port by the end of 2024.

Apple's adoption of USB-C ports has been announced for some time, but what is less clear is whether the revamped accessories will adopt design changes other than USB-C ports. Apple's trackpad, mouse, and keyboard designs have been largely limited to minor modifications since the last major update in 2015. In recent years, new color options were introduced in the 24-inch iMac, and Apple brought Touch ID technology from older iPhone models to the Magic Keyboard.

USB-C charging for the Magic Mouse, one of the most popular devices among those using the best MacBooks, is a welcome update, but there is another design feature that is in dire need of a revamp. If you're an Apple mouse user, you probably already know what I'm talking about, considering that Magic Mouse's biggest design flaw has become a meme. For Apple's Magic Mouse to truly be the best mouse, it needs to ditch the charging port on the underside.

This particular arrangement makes Apple's mouse unusable while charging, which is extremely inconvenient. It is unclear whether the new version's design will place the USB-C port in a less frustrating location, but we are hopeful that Apple's switch from Lightning to USB-C may solve this headache once and for all.
