No Hard Feelings," starring Jennifer Lawrence, debuted at No. 1 on Netflix.

However, the success of "No Hard Feelings" on Netflix proves that there is still a desire for funny movies that are not afraid of a little corny humor.

"No Hard Feelings," which appeared on Netflix last week, has vaulted to the top of the most-watched list today. The Jennifer Lawrence film is up there with such Halloween family favorites as "Hotel Transylvania 2" and "Casper," beating out stiff competition from its contemporaries, the comedies "Old Dads" and "Long Shot." [However, "No Hard Feelings" has not been smooth sailing; it has been a box office disappointment and reviews have been mixed. Let my own experience with the film help you decide if it's worth streaming on Netflix or if you should skip it.

"No Hard Feelings" stars Maddy Barker (Jennifer Lawrence), a down-and-out bartender and Uber driver in Montauk, New York, who is fighting the gentrification of her hometown. With bills mounting, potential bankruptcy, and her childhood home in danger of foreclosure, Maddie needs to earn cash as quickly as possible.

After finding an unusual Craigslist ad, Maddy agrees to "date" Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), a 19-year-old introvert son of a wealthy couple, in exchange for a Buick Regal. Percy's parents hope that spending time with Maddie will bring Percy out of his shell and give him confidence as he enters Princeton University in the fall.

After spending only one summer trying to seduce Percy, Maddie finds the task more difficult than she expected. She also faces a moral dilemma when the socially awkward teen, oblivious to her parents' schemes, begins to develop genuine feelings for her.

Released exclusively in June, "No Hard Feelings" received mixed reviews; on RottenTomatoes, it scored a modest 71% from about 220 ratings, but audience scores were more impressive, with a current score of 87%.

The Wrap's Tomris Laffly praised Lawrence's performance and comfortable comedienne, saying the film is "elevated by the star's intense comic timing and effortless silliness." Entertainment Weekly's Devan Cogan similarly praised the former "Hunger Games" star: "And reminds us that Lawrence is one of Hollywood's best (and funniest) leading ladies. [The slightly odd but oddly touching relationship between 32-year-old Maddie and 19-year-old Percy was also praised by several critics, including Vulture's Birge Ebiri. They said, "Despite its breeziness, 'No Hard Feelings' sticks with you because its central dynamic feels surprisingly honest."

Many critics, however, were not so kind in their assessment. David Fear of The Rolling Stones was quite scathing, writing, "Even J-Law can't save this lazy, desperate to offend film by unchaining the Nice Young Lady. This film is not up to her level. Or not up to any level." Meanwhile, Kevin Maher of The Times of London described the comedy film as "surprisingly unfunny" and called the basic premise "not once credible."

"No Hard Feelings" is a return to the type of high-concept comedy that was all the rage decades ago; if you liked the early 2000s, you may miss this very silly film. It's also a good choice if you're looking for something lighthearted rather than in the mood for serious drama or chilling true-crime docs.

The premise is pretty ridiculous--and the film never comments on how inherently strange it is for parents to hire an older woman to "date" their teenage son--but as long as you can accept the outlandishness of the plot, perhaps "No . will have a good time with Hard Feelings."

If you're looking for a movie that really sticks with you or makes you think, feel free to skip it. But if you're in the mood for a refreshing movie that you can enjoy for 100 minutes or so, "No Hard Feelings" is worth streaming.
