iOS 17.1 has been released - here are the new features and fixes for the iPhone.

iOS 17 has received its first major update with the release of iOS 17.1. users have been enjoying the latest software for the iPhone since the iPhone 15 was released in September.

New software releases are sometimes accompanied by bugs that did not show up during beta testing. iOS 17's release some of the biggest issues related to users who purchased the new iPhone 15 Pro Max, and they complained about the ghosting effect of its OLED panel. They complained about the It is assumed that the update targets this ghosting effect, as there are details in the update that mention a fix that could cause persistence of the display image.

Meanwhile, the release of iOS 17.1 is also full of new features that continue to enhance some of the new experiences that users are coming to use on a daily basis. However, one of the most anticipated features in iOS 17 is still missing.

More details on the iOS 17.1 release and other features will follow. But before you can check them out for yourself, you must first update your system. The process is pretty straightforward, but if you need a refresher, our guide on how to update your iPhone explains it in detail.

While Apple does not explicitly say it is directed to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the iOS 17.1 update "fixes an issue that could cause display image persistence. Models affected by this issue are seeing a ghosting effect where some images remain on the device's OLED panel."

Once iOS 17.1 is made available to affected models, we will know the extent to which this software tuning will be effective.

iOS 17.1 is more than just bug fixes. This software update also adds new features, including those promised in the iOS 17 preview earlier this summer.

When Apple detailed the AirDrop changes in iOS 17, it noted that the file tranfer feature adds the ability to complete large transfers even after iPhones are no longer in close proximity to one another. This enhancement was seen as a way to enable the transfer of large files, such as videos, using AirDrop without requiring the user to be in close proximity throughout the transfer.

Early in the iOS 17 beta, Apple indicated that the ability to complete AirDrop transfers over the Internet would not be included in the initial release of iOS 17. Well, it will eventually be available in the iOS 17.1 release, and AirDrop settings will offer the option to complete a transfer when you are no longer in AirDrop range.

Apple has added Favorites Playlist to the iPhone's Music app, allowing users to collect their favorite songs in one place. This is now part of the iOS 17.1 update, but the foundation of that playlist is a feature - you can now tap a star on the Now Playing screen to easily indicate it as a favorite song.

Additionally, there is now an option to add art collections to the playlist. And finally, iOS 17.1 adds song suggestions that appear at the bottom of the playlist and may help you discover other songs that match your preferences.

Those with iPhones that support always-on display, such as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will find that iOS 17's standby mode will allow the screen to dim until additional option for how long it remains active.

While not the biggest addition to iOS 17.1, the flashlight can now be controlled by Dynamic Island. When flashlight is enabled, a flashlight icon will appear in the "Live Activity" area on iPhones with Dynamic Island. This will make it easier to turn off the flashlight if it is accidentally turned on.

While these are the most notable changes in iOS 17.1, Apple has addressed several other bugs in this update. They include:

Some things that were promised to be added in iOS 17 but were cut in iOS 17.1. This includes the Journal app, which encourages users to log memories based on photos, locations, and other prompts stored on the iPhone. Apple has promised that Journal will be available on the iPhone later this year.

Also missing from the list of changes and enhancements with the release of iOS 17.1 are the refinement controls rumored to be coming to the Action button. Rumors suggest that the proximity sensor on the iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 17.1 will be able to determine if you are in your pocket. In that case, you would need to press the phone's action button long enough to trigger the shortcut you have set up.

The idea behind this feature is to eliminate the possibility of accidentally pressing the action button.
