MacBook Pro M3 Could Be Focus of Scary Fast Event - But Supply May Be Short

A refreshed MacBook Pro with the new Apple M3 chip may be the focus of next week's Scary Fast event.

This is according to new statements from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who until recently said that we would not see a new MacBook until next year. However, now that Apple's event has been decided, Kuo has had to rethink his prediction.

In the past, there has been a gap between the announcement of the standard M-series chips and the Pro/Max/Ultra versions. This time, however, it appears that the standard M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max may all appear together.

We assume that Kuo is referring to the new 14" or 16" MacBook Pro in his tweet. However, he could also be talking about the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M3, a model that has not been changed since June 2022.

Kuo also warns that the supply of new Macs to be released could be limited, as Apple only plans to ship 400,000 to 500,000 laptops this quarter.

These new MacBooks are not expected to have any major changes beyond new chips, and the fact that Apple is not planning an in-person event for next week's announcement seems to confirm that suspicion. If you are looking for a more significant upgrade before you buy your next MacBook, Kuo says that you will not see a complete new design for the MacBook Pro for another year or more, and only if shipments continue to stagnate.

Kuo adds that a less expensive MacBook, perhaps even a regular "MacBook" rather than an Air or Pro, may be on the horizon; it has been several years since Apple last sold a vanilla MacBook, but rather than relying on users to buy older models at a discount, the company is looking for dedicated offering mid-range laptops again might be a smart move.

While Kuo's predictions have a reasonable track record, the only way to know for sure what the Scary Fast event has in store is to watch it and find out. We'll be following the event live and will be there hands-on as soon as possible with any new devices.
