Nvidia and AMD Plan to Launch Their Own PC Chips by 2025 to Compete with Intel

Nvidia is synonymous with dedicated GPUs and has been a dominant force in the PC gaming field. But according to Reuters, the company is planning to roll the tank on Intel's turf and start manufacturing Arm-based CPUs. [Along with AMD, Nvidia could have PC chips ready as early as 2025. Even with a few failed experiments in the past in the Arm-based space (Microsoft Surface RT), Intel must be starting to sweat their own ticking clock.

So far, Microsoft has had an exclusive relationship with Qualcomm when it comes to Arm-based Windows machines. But just before the chip company's next big Snapdragon announcement, which includes a new PC CPU to rival the power of the M2, Nvidia and AMD announced their intention to diversify the chipset choices available for personal computing.

This marks Nvidia's big return to bat after the failed Surface RT featured a Tegra processor. Since that debacle, Nvidia has not produced a single Arm-based chip for Windows devices, but in just over a year, that will all change. [A key target for the overall Windows CPU market is clearly the performance and power efficiency of Apple's silicon. In fact, there are rumors that Qualcomm will launch a flagship chip for PCs designed by a team of former Apple engineers. [Nvidia and AMD will need to show their A-game to compete with Apple's M3 and what Qualcomm is starting to drop in this area. But there is one company that has been worryingly absent from this competition...

Here's the reality: Nvidia and AMD may be aiming to compete with Apple Silicon with their Arm-based chips, but the real target here is Intel. Intel is struggling to keep up with the Cupertino crew regarding performance and battery life for its M1 and M2 chips.

Intel is trying again with Meteor Lake Core Ultra CPUs, which appear to be a thorough redesign packed with better performance and power efficiency while introducing AI smarts with built-in VPUs.

However, the countdown has begun to close the gap with Apple before AMD and Nvidia can break in. If Intel does not move fast enough in the next 18 months, it could soon become irrelevant.
