Apple "Scary Fast" Event on October 30 - New iMac, MacBook Pro M3, and Latest News

Update: Our live blog of the Apple October event will bring you all the big M3 Mac news and more.

With Halloween just around the corner, Apple has quite a treat in store for those anticipating a new Mac model: Apple's "Scary Fast" event will take place today, October 30, and it looks like a new Mac will be announced.

We have previously heard rumors that Apple would be announcing this month, particularly a new iPad. However, that rumor did not materialize and Apple only announced a new version of the USB-C connected stylus Apple Pencil on October 17.

Now, however, it is certain that a new Apple product will be announced on October 30. Here is what we know about the October Apple event and what we expect.

The October Apple event is scheduled for October 30 at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST, and unlike the in-person event like the September get-together where the new iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 models were announced, it will be a virtual-only event. will be a virtual-only event. At other events, Apple simply issues a press release detailing the new products. Now, however, Apple is holding a virtual presentation.

Apple has held October product launches before, but the timing is particularly interesting because Apple plans to announce its quarterly results on November 2. Since the company's fourth quarter earnings are typically released in October, Apple's delay of the announcement to November increases the likelihood of a product launch.

Apple has added an option to add the event start time to the calendar on the event page, where the entire event will be live streamed.

On YouTube, Apple has added a stream placeholder for the big event, and on the stream on the official website you can see an animated Apple logo that transforms into a Finder icon. This is another small clue that new Mac hardware (or silicon) may be announced at the event.

A live stream will be available Tuesday morning, probably a few hours before the event starts at 5 p.m. PT.

Those with Apple TV or other Apple devices can also watch the event via the TV app.

Updates to the iPhone and Apple Watch are already included in this year's schedule, so the most likely announcement for October 2023 would be a new iMac. The interval between updates is long.

Garman's report also suggests the possibility of a new MacBook Pro, citing limited supply as the reason. As of this writing, some 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models have November ship dates, suggesting that Apple needs to refresh its lineup.

Of course, Apple released new MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max silicon in January, and it seems unlikely that there will be an update to either the 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro this year However, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is expected to be updated this year. However, the 13-inch MacBook Pro was last updated in June 2022 with the M2 chipset.

Current iMacs have the M1 chipset, so the upgraded silicon will most likely be replaced in newer models; Apple may use the M2 chipset in the all-in-one, but more persistent rumors suggest that the upgraded Apple M3 silicon in the iMac.

In any case, the M3 is set to appear this year, so Apple would be rolling out two upgrades for the price of one by putting that silicon in the 2023 iMac. Nevertheless, other reports indicate that M3 is likely to be released in 2024, and it will be in the MacBook Pro at that time.

According to leaked specs, the M3 will start with 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores; speculation about the M3 Max system-on-chip is that it will have up to 16 CPU cores and up to 40 GPU cores. The M3 Ultra, on the other hand, could offer 28 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores.

The iMac, announced in 2021, also features a redesigned all-in-one setup; there is talk of a 32-inch iMac, but that is expected next year.

The latest 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were introduced only nine months ago, and these models will likely not be upgraded until 2024 or later. Nevertheless, it is not out of the realm of possibility that a second update will occur within a year.

A more likely scenario is that the 13-inch MacBook Pro may get an update first; an upgrade to the M3 chipset seems the most likely change, which is also what most experts expect to happen this spring.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the M3-equipped MacBook Pro will be the star of the October 30 show. However, due to the limited number of units initially available, it may be difficult to purchase one at launch.

One part of Apple's lineup that has not been updated for some time is peripherals; according to Marc Gurman's latest report (as of Friday, October 27), Apple will be releasing a new Magic Keyboard with USB-C charging port, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad with USB-C charging ports. It is unclear if any of these devices will be redesigned, and it is expected that the mouse will need to be flipped over to charge.

Other products awaiting updates are all iPads. In fact, if there is no new iPad between now and the New Year, there will be no tablet release from Apple until 2023.

Earlier this month, there were rumors that both the iPad mini 7 and iPad Air 6 would be announced in October, and there was talk of updates to the mini and Air products. However, the rumored announcement date passed without the announcement of anything but an updated Apple Pencil, and it was expected that Apple would hold off on new iPad models until early next year.

Nevertheless, if iPads are included in this month's product announcements, the most significant changes will probably involve new chipsets. iPad mini 7 is expected to feature an A16 chip like the one found in the iPhone 14 Pro and standard iPhone 15 models. The iPad Air 6 is expected to use M2 silicon.
