The Evil Within (and its sequel) is free on Halloween - here's how to claim it

The only thing better than playing seriously scary horror games during the Halloween season is being able to play the best spooky games without spending a fortune. And now, two of the best survival horror games of the past decade are available on the Epic Games Store, completely free.

Right now, you can download and save "The Evil Within" for free on the Epic Games Store. The promotion lasts through Thursday, October 26. 26. After that, "The Evil Within 2" will take its place, free through November 2. Whether you've played them or not, claim these games now. Once you add them to your library, the rest is yours.

Meanwhile, if you're a console player, both games are on sale for a combined $13 in the PlayStation Store's Halloween sale. Of course, this is not as good as free, but it is still a great price for two horror experiences. Xbox users can also play them with Xbox Game Pass and get them at a discount with the Shocktober sale.

Created by the twisted mind of Shinji Mikami, one of the founders of the modern survival horror genre, The Evil Within is a nerve-wracking journey through hell. You play Sebastian Castellanos, a detective who is transported to a strange world while investigating a mass murder and must fight to survive against numerous nightmarish enemies.

In "The Evil Within" (Mikami was the director of that legendary game), which is positioned as a sort of spiritual sequel to "Resident Evil 4," you are thrown into claustrophobic situations and forced to fight off an array of deformed enemies that will quicken your pulse. You may have an arsenal of firearms at your disposal, but you will always feel underpowered as your enemies come at you relentlessly and violently. To survive, you must use your limited resources strategically.

The game's story is a bit half-hearted, but its atmosphere and tension are unrivaled. From a sinister asylum to a crumbling, abandoned city, The Evil Within takes players to haunting places. Unfortunately, however, the bland main cast is not so prominent. However, if you are looking for a very frightening experience, you will not be disappointed.

Released in 2017, three years after its predecessor, The Evil Within 2 took everything that was good about its predecessor - atmosphere, strong visual design, and tight gameplay - and put it into a semi-open world structure. Hailed by many critics as a significant improvement, "The Evil Within 2" lowered the difficulty level to create a more accessible experience.

While this sequel is still quite creepy, it has somewhat lost the palm-sweating tension of the first Evil Within. And sadly, the story and characters are still quite flimsy. Nevertheless, it's still a highly enjoyable horror experience, with some big-time moments that combine fun scares and blockbuster thrills; both "The Evil Within" and "The Evil Within 2" are worth playing this Halloween.
