Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 may not receive this important upgrade

According to a new claim from leaker IceUniverse, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 may arrive next year without a major camera upgrade to show off.

IU mentions the only camera in his Twitter/X post, which could mean he is only talking about the main rear camera. It is also possible that "camera" is a typo and he may actually be talking about the total of five sensors on the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

This new claim confirms previous rumors from Revegnus that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is coming in 2025 and could be the next big update to the camera.

Samsung has a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 10MP 3x telephoto camera, a 10MP outer selfie camera, and a 4MP inner under-display selfie camera on the current Galaxy Z Fold 5.

This is a comprehensive set of cameras, but it does not lead to the same high-quality experience that one would get from the Google Pixel Fold. Furthermore, as IU noted, this is the same set of cameras found on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with the ultrawide and inner selfie cameras ported over from the 2021 Galaxy Z Fold 3.

It would not be a complete surprise to see no camera upgrades to the Z Fold line this year. Samsung and other major phone makers such as Apple and Google have often used the same sensors in their phones for years.

But keeping the camera the same does not mean that there is zero chance of an upgrade. Software changes, whether it is the camera itself or the entire phone's operating system, can always make a difference. So let's hope that Samsung still has something new to offer users regarding the Galaxy Z Fold 6's camera.

That said, Samsung needs to seriously improve the folding game in general. The newly released OnePlus Open just became the new top dog in the best foldable phone gang, and the Google Pixel Fold has a lot of its own charm. Samsung has the advantage of having been making foldable phones for a long time and offering the industry's best displays with stylus support. But without a more significant overhaul, the once-pioneering Galaxy Z Fold series may become irrelevant.

Luckily for us, Samsung seems to be working on other major changes for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 that are not camera-related. For one thing, The Elec reports that it may be thinner, thanks to efforts to reverse engineer rival foldable devices like the China-only Huawei Mate X3.

The upcoming Z Fold may also feature a refreshed foldable new form factor, with dust resistance in addition to the current IPX8 water resistance, and a wider front display, among other things. more affordable than the $1,800 full-fat Z Fold and an all-new "Lite" model may also be introduced.

Perhaps the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be announced next summer, either at the Galaxy Unpacked event in late July as this year, or in August as usual. Rumors suggest that the camera may be upgraded with the 50MP main sensor found in the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy S23, and Galaxy S23 Plus.
