Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 may have a "retro" version

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is Samsung's most modern looking phone. While the clamshell design has its drawbacks (especially in terms of battery life), it is one of the best Android phones you can buy for those who prioritize style.

However, Samsung apparently wants to give the cutting-edge modern design an old-school makeover; according to MS Power User, Samsung is planning a new color scheme that will be marketed as a "Retro Edition."

You can see what it looks like in the article below. It is essentially the same phone, but with different colors and finishes.

The current model's shiny frame will be replaced by matte aluminum, and the back will be a stylish, austere dark blue. The result looks a bit less playful than some of the options currently available on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. There's cool mint, gentle lavender, light blue, bright yellow, cream, and the safe and familiar graphite black.

For now, it is not clear if this retro reskin is just skin deep or if Samsung plans to add some aesthetic software tweaks to the phone's operating system. In the past, such special edition phones have often come with additional sound effects, icons, ringtones, or wallpaper to match the theme, such as OnePlus' unexpected Pac-Man spec Nord 2.

The images certainly look authentic, but as always, this remains a rumor until officially announced by Samsung. However, according to MS Power User, the device will appear "in the coming weeks," so we should know soon anyway.

Even if you like the look of the photo, should you buy it? That's a difficult question to answer objectively, as despite significant improvements over the generations, folding remains an acquired taste and is not for everyone, especially considering the price, which starts at $999.

In his three-and-a-half-star Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review, our senior channel editor (phones) John Velasco praised the larger external screen and improved camera, but lamented the poor battery life and the device's limitations when closed.

"The collective improvements may not be a huge leap for the foldable, but they are enough to push the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 back into the conversation," he concluded.
