Instead, they are for shows that were supposed to last longer than a season but were cancelled before the TV gods had other plans, the story was complete, the characters were established, and the world was fully built.
But even though the brakes were put on these series early on, none of them have managed to transcend their one-time-only broadcast status and prove that, in the end, less is more. Following are the best TV shows that aired for only one season.
One of the best and most beloved teen dramas of all time, this ABC series followed high school student Angela Chase (Golden Globe winner Claire Danes) and her friends' hormonal woes from August 25, 1994 to January 1995. It aired only from August 25, 1994 to January 26, 1995, and starred not only Danes but also Jared Leto and Wilson Cruz.
"My So-Called Life" gained many fans, but did not make it to a second season, despite an online fan campaign to save the show, the first in Internet history. But executive producer Winnie Holtzman said that, in the end, the series deserved its short but sweet tenure: "This is a show about coming of age, and it sort of ended in adolescence," she said in a DVD special. 'This show is about adolescence, and it sort of ended in adolescence. This show ended at a point where everything was still possible."

"Rockford Peach" fans cheered when they heard Amazon was adapting the 1992 sports film "A League of Their Own" for television.
However, those TV dreams were shattered when Variety magazine reported that the streaming distributor would not go ahead with the shortened second season amid the WGA and SAG strikes, and would instead cancel the entire series. Whether it will be picked up elsewhere remains to be seen, but for now, it is sadly game over for Carson, played by Abby Jacobson, Maxine, played by Shante Adams, Greta, played by Darcy Carden, and the rest of the team.

The legacy of this coming-of-age cult classic extends beyond its episode count: only 12 episodes aired on NBC from September 1999 to July 2000, when it was canceled; the last six episodes aired a few months later on ABC Family and the last six episodes aired on ABC Family a few months later. However, it created a juggernaut of comedy from its talent, both on-screen (Jason Segel, Seth Rogen) and off-screen (the series was executive-produced by Judd Apatow, who would go on to define most of the humor of his era).
The show follows Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini), a bookworm-turned-burnout victim thanks to her Zeppelin-loving, pot-smoking "freak" friends, her nerdy brother Sam (John Francis Daley), and his equally dodgy friends ( Martin Starr and Sam Levine) spend the 1980 school year at McKinley High School. Although "Freaks and Geeks" failed to compete with timeslot competitors such as "The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Millionaire," it remains a heartfelt and hilarious portrait of teenage life.

Television is so bereft of quality rom-coms that we cling for dear life when we come across one; Hulu's "High Fidelity," based on Nick Hornby's 1995 novel and the 2000 film adaptation, is a film Zoë Kravitz replaces John Cusack as the romantically awkward record store owner Rob. While incorporating familiar elements from the book and film, such as the Top 5 list and breaking the fourth wall, the show freshened up for 2020 by increasing the racial and sexual diversity of the characters (including scene stealer Davine Joy Randolph as Rob's best friend Cherise).
However, despite garnering positive reviews, the streaming company declined to air additional episodes. 'They didn't understand what that show was and what it could do,' she told Elle in 2022. 'The amount of letters and DMs, the people on the street, the women who look like us: ...... The love for the program meant so much to people."

Amy Sherman-Palladino is the creator of some of television's most beloved and enduring series, including "Gilmore Girls" (2000-2007) and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" (2017-2023). Tony Award winner Sutton Foster is a former Las Vegas showgirl who ends up mentoring a young ballerina in a sleepy California town.
The ABC Family show was similarly captivating with the writer-director's signature screwball humor and fast-talking repartee, but was not renewed for a second season. In 2013, Sherman-Palladino ridiculed the network in Buzzfeed magazine, saying, "... the network is a "joke.")

On paper, "Firefly" was supposed to be a long-term success. Creator Joss Whedon had just had a successful sci-fi run with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," both of which aired for more than five seasons. Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, and Alan Tudyk were among the cast.
However, despite its popularity with critics, awards organizations (it won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in 2003), and fans, the show was canceled by Fox in 2002 after only 11 of the 14 episodes produced had aired. 2005's The sequel, Serenity, produced in 2005, is a testament to its enthusiastic following.

Though it aired in two "parts" in August 2016 and April 2017, this Netflix musical drama created by Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis is strictly one season. set in the 1970s in the South Bronx Set in the South Bronx in the 1970s, the 11-episode series is an energetic ode to the rise of hip-hop and disco in New York City, a time capsule of a group of local teenage phenoms (Justice Smith, Shaymik Moore, Skyran Brooks, Jaden Smith, and newcomer Tremaine "TJ" Brown Jr.) takes center stage.
But despite the fantastic fun, big-budget production that Rahman always brings, and a killer soundtrack (Nas, Grandmaster Flash, and Curtis Blow were producers on the series), Netflix shockingly released the finale of the film a month after the show's premiere.
