OnePlus 12 Leaked Display Could Blow Away Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

OnePlus is not resting on its laurels following the successful launch of the excellent folding OnePlus Open; on Weibo, the company is teasing an event next week that promises to showcase a "historic moment for Chinese screens" in collaboration with BOE Technology.

That's a typically cryptic invitation, but a reliable leaker, Digital Chat Station, provides a bit more clarity elsewhere on the platform. The leaker suggests that the two companies have developed a 1440p panel with a brightness of 3,000 nits.

For context, that is indeed very bright. Apple has reported extensively that the iPhone 15 recorded 2,000 nits, and recently the Pixel 8 Pro recorded 2,400 nits. In fact, OnePlus claims that the OnePlus Open can achieve 2,800 nits.

Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to have a 2,500 nits display, so this new panel could also be Samsung's next flagship.

The leak also indicates that the screen may feature 2,160 Hz PWM dimming, which would be helpful for those who tend to suffer from eye strain after prolonged smartphone use.

The question is what this screen is for, and the obvious candidate is the OnePlus 12. the OnePlus 11 only debuted in January of this year, but as smartphone makers race to be the first to jump out of the trap with the fastest processor the early release of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 could jump-start the release cycle.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Qualcomm Summit, where the company will present its new Snapdragon technology, is scheduled for October 24-26, rather than the usual November-December. This coincides nicely with the OnePlus event on October 24.

Sometimes, however, coincidences are just coincidences.

However, sometimes coincidences are just coincidences, even if they are close-ups of the camera lens. In other words, even if this technology does eventually make it into the OnePlus 12, the smartphone may not be announced until much later.

One more addition, Digital Chat Station previously suggested that the peak brightness of the OnePlus 12's screen "appears to be 2,600 nits." Perhaps this early information was incorrect, but even if not, 2,600 nits is still not dim.

In any case, the OnePlus 12 is definitely a smartphone to watch if you like Android. Not only does it have an ultra-bright screen and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but there are also rumors that OnePlus will allow purchasers to load up to 24GB RAM and 1TB of storage in the device. A significant camera upgrade and a 5,400mAh battery are also expected.
