7 movies streaming this weekend on Netflix, Hulu and more

Another weekend has come and gone. But with an abundance of excellent choices on the best streaming services, including Netflix and Max, it's hard to narrow down the best movies to watch next time.

So how about we do the heavy lifting for you. We've carefully curated a list of the best movies to start your weekend.

In honor of Halloween being just around the corner, we've listed a few options for a spooky atmosphere, including Hulu's creepy new horror thriller "Cobweb" and the cult classic "Shaun of the Dead". Speaking of new movies, the western drama "Surrounded," starring Letitia Wright, made its streaming debut this week on Prime Video.

Here are our top picks for what to watch on streaming this weekend.

First up, Letitia Wright, who plays Suri in "Black Panther," takes us on a journey through the Wild West. Five years after the Civil War, freedwoman and former buffalo soldier Moses "Mo" Washington (Wright) poses as a man and sets out to acquire a Colorado gold mine bequeathed to her by her late father, a slave owner. But when her stagecoach is ambushed by a gang of vicious thieves, her plans and fortune are thrown into limbo.

To make her way west, she takes the leader of the gang, legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell), hostage, and the two clash in a battle of wills as they struggle to survive the unforgiving terrain of the American West, blurring the lines between captor and prisoner. Available on Prime Video

Romantic films usually don't get much recognition at the Oscars, but "Silver Linings Playbook" bucks the trend thanks to its stellar cast and laser-sharp script. Bradley Cooper stars as Pat, a former teacher suffering from bipolar disorder. After being released from a mental hospital, he moves in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) and tries to start his life over.

Top on the list is reuniting with his estranged wife, but things get complicated when he meets vivacious young widow Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) As the two grow closer, Pat begins to see Tiffany as more than just a dance partner. If you're in the mood for a romantic comedy that tackles heavy themes, "Silver Linings Playbook" is definitely one to check out. Available on Netflix

October means we have to recommend at least one horror film, and while Hulu's latest fright flick, Cobweb, doesn't break any new ground, it is a solid entry in the genre and Samuel Bodin's directorial debut film.

The film follows Peter (Woody Norman), an 8-year-old boy suffering from bullying at school and being raised by his emotionally distant helicopter parents Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr of "The Boys" fame). He becomes suspicious of his parents after they dismiss his concerns about a mysterious listening device beeping behind his bedroom wall. The evidence suggests he may still be trapped in the house. Available on Hulu

"Shaun of the Dead" was crowned the funniest zombie movie of all time. It was also the height of the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg combination before they produced blockbuster comedies like "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End".

Pegg plays Sean, a 30-something electronics salesman who finds himself in a tight spot when a horde of zombies descends on London. He teams up with his shifty best friend and roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), on a mission to save his friends and family. Aside from a script that strikes the perfect balance between outlandish humor and smart, subtle foreshadowing, Pegg and his co-writer do an excellent job of portraying an average Joe caught up in a not-so-average situation. Available on Peacock

While the blurb for "Peter and the Wolf" seems a bit gimmicky, the trailer's fluid and gorgeously stylized animation is intriguing. The short film brings Sergei Prokofiev's symphony to life in a coming-of-age story that explores themes of grief, courage, transformation, and relationship with nature.

After the death of his parents, 12-year-old Peter is left in the care of his grandfather. When he hears that wolves are running free, his curiosity gets the better of him and he sets out to find them by exploring the vast meadows and forests nearby. Along the way, he befriends some of the local animals, who help him in his search while he fights with hunters who are trying to capture the wolves and get a bounty on them.

The art superimposes hand-drawn 2D animation and real-world environmental models, punctuated by almost chalk-like sketches, named after the scratchy white lines of Bono's illustrations. Combined with the black, white, and red color palette, "Peter and the Wolf" looks stylish and an absolute delight, especially for those looking for a family-friendly film. While the subsequent five films in the "Jurassic Park" series have been of varying quality and sometimes questionable, the original is an undeniable masterpiece. Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, the same writer and director who wrote and directed "Westworld," which was later adapted by HBO. Like "Westworld," "Jurassic Park" takes place in an awe-inspiring amusement park with incredible science. Unfortunately, things go incredibly wrong when the people running the amusement park lose control of what they have created.

Starring Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and Richard Attenborough as Dr. John Hammond. It has everything you need: a phenomenal cast, an excellent director (Steven Spielberg), the iconic John Williams score, and CGI from Industrial Light and Magic. Frankly, I'd be shocked if this isn't one of the greatest films of all time, and I urge you to see it while it's available on Peacock. Available on Peacock

Comedian Bill Burr's directorial debut, Netflix's latest corny comedy "Old Dads," has quickly shot to the top of the streaming giant's most-watched movies list.

Three middle-aged men and their lifelong best friends become fathers late in life and end up "battling kindergarten principals, millennial CEOs, and anything made after 1987," Netflix's synopsis reads. In addition to sitting in the director's chair, Barr also stars in the film alongside Bobby Canavale and Boquim Woodbine as an unsympathetic LA father.
