TV Breakthrough Wins Nobel Prize - OLED TVs Now Have It

Quantum dots are an amazing technology. These tiny dots reproduce colors based on the size of the dot through which light passes, making them ideal for television displays. Now, the developers of this technology have been officially recognized for their breakthrough.

In a press release earlier this month (h/t FlatpanelsHD), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Mungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus, and Alexey I. Ekimov for the discovery and development of quantum dots. This is a great achievement, but the best part? You can now buy an OLED TV using these award-winning quantum dots.

Now before we get into which OLED TVs use quantum dots and are worth buying if you need an upgrade, let's discuss how quantum dots work in TV displays.

Currently, some TVs use what are called quantum dot filters that allow light to pass through the display layer of quantum dots. Quantum dots 7 nanometers wide convert light into red, dots 5 nanometers wide convert light into green, and dots 3 nanometers wide convert light into blue.

These filters are becoming more commonly used than conventional LED-LCD and OLED TVs because they are better at reproducing accurate colors. LED-LCD TVs using quantum dot filters are called QLED, QNED, Quantum or miniLED TVs, while OLED TVs using quantum dot filters are called QD-OLED TVs.

You will find several QLED and QD-OLED TVs in our Best TV Buying Guide. However, there are two QD-OLED TVs that really come out on top, especially when it comes to the best OLED TVs.

First, Samsung's S95C OLED TV uses quantum dot filters to improve brightness and color accuracy. We love this TV not only for the aforementioned impressive brightness, but also for the One Connect box that makes cable management easy. It's currently the best OLED TV we've tested.

Then there's the Sony Bravia XR A95K OLED TV, which was the best OLED TV until the S95C took the top spot. Thanks to the quantum dot filter, the colors and brightness are outstanding, especially in HDR. We have yet to test Sony's latest QD-OLED TV, the Sony Bravia XR A95L OLED TV, which also impressed us in our early hands-on.

Thus, if you want to upgrade to one of the best OLED TVs, getting one with the award-winning quantum dot technology is definitely a smart choice.
