OnePlus Open specs show potential to shatter Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold

The OnePlus Open's secrets may have been revealed a little earlier with renderings by leakers Max Jambor and Yogesh Brar and a list of some key specifications provided by Blar.

OnePlus has already confirmed that the Open will debut at an event in Mumbai on Thursday, October 19. But for those particularly interested in how the company's first foldable will perform, we can already get a decent idea from the alleged spec sheet.

Starting with the screen, it will apparently feature a 7.82-inch display on the inside and a 6.31-inch display on the outside. According to leaked specs, both screens have a 120Hz refresh rate and a maximum brightness of 2,800 nits, which theoretically should give Open a size and brightness advantage over both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold.

The design of the OnePlus Open resembles a standard OnePlus phone, with a large circular camera block on the back and an alert slider on the side; Blar's specs show that the Open offers IPX4 water resistance, which is not as good as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Pixel Fold's IPX8, but not as good as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Pixel Fold's IPX8, but it does offer some protection.

Also, like other OnePlus models, the Open appears to be available in two colors, black and green. These are officially named Voyager Black (which happens to be the brighter of the two color options) and Emerald Dusk.

The OnePlus foldable will feature a 48MP main camera and an ultra-wide camera, the spec list continued, plus a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom on the back. As for the front camera, it appears to be a 20MP one on the inside of the Open and a 32MP one on the outside; whether the OnePlus Open can match the impressive photos of Google and Samsung's foldables is hard to tell based on sensor resolution alone, but the powerful sensor and regular Hasselblad tuning (which seems to be identified by the "H" logo on the camera block) should give the Open a good chance.

Allegedly, the OnePlus Open is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, with one 16GB RAM and one 512GB storage variant, which is more than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold with default RAM and more storage. As for software, Open will install OxygenOS 13.2, a skin of Android 13.

OnePlus usually impresses with its phones' batteries, but if the OnePlus Open really does offer a 4,805 mAh battery with 80W charging (only 67W in Europe) as Blar claims, the OnePlus Open apparently appears to be doing so again. This battery capacity and charging wattage would beat both Samsung and Google's latest foldable, although there is no sign of the wireless charging offered by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold.

We will find out on Thursday if these specs are correct and if there are any other surprises not revealed in these specs, such as the OnePlus Open's price. But assuming these details hold true for now, the OnePlus Open looks likely to be one of the best folding phones on the market.
