Older devices that will no longer work with Netflix - what you need to know

Netflix is one of the best streaming services, in part because it is available on nearly every streaming device. However, some of its perks have disappeared.

As first reported by What's on Netflix, people are getting warning messages that "Netflix will not be available on this device after October 16." These warnings were first reported by users about a month ago on forums such as Reddit, so the good news is that - if you recently turned on your device and launched Netflix - you were hopefully warned that this was coming.

But for the rest of us, this was a bit of a shock. I, in particular, have only marginally used my old Sony Playstation Vita and have just learned that Netflix is not available; while it won't diminish my attachment to the Vita, I was still a little disappointed to learn this fact.

Netflix has yet to reveal why the affected devices are being discontinued, but we will update this article when there is an official explanation.

We don't know which specific devices are no longer available, but we do have some helpful information.

Reports we have seen so far indicate that only older devices are affected, most of which are around 10 years old or older. So don't worry about new LG C2 OLED TVs losing support, and smart TVs and streaming devices you buy this Black Friday shouldn't lose support for the Netflix app either.

So far, older devices that have been reported to lose support for the Netflix app include:

If in doubt, Netflix has a page listing devices that support Netflix, and if your device is compatible with the streaming service's various apps. As of this writing, the Vita is listed as a supported device. However, I have seen reports on Reddit that the Vita is no longer compatible with Netflix, which seems to confirm the report on What's on Netflix. Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm that Netflix works on my Vita, as my Vita has so far chosen not to cooperate.

The good news is that if you still want to watch Netflix, you don't have to ditch your TV or Bluray player just yet. Most of our best streaming devices can stream Netflix for under $50.

If you don't have a 4K TV, you can get Netflix on your TV even cheaper: the Chromecast with Google TV HD is a great way to turn your TV into a smart TV for just under $30.

In short, streaming dongles and devices make it easy to regain access to Netflix with a relatively inexpensive fix. It's not as convenient as previous smart devices, but it's certainly cheaper than replacing your beloved TV or Blu-ray player.
