Apple Announces Inexpensive $79 Apple Pencil for USB-C iPads - Why Does It Matter?

Apple has announced an inexpensive Apple Pencil with USB-C charging support. Compatible with some of the best iPads, including the latest iPad 10th generation, this $79 peripheral lets you take notes, sketch, edit photos, and journal. You also get both low latency and tilt sensitivity.

And best of all, the new Apple Pencil has a sliding cap that shows off the USB-C port. The 10th generation iPad can be charged via USB without the need for a USB-C to Lightning adapter.

When the stylus is magnetically attached to the iPad, it enters sleep mode to conserve battery power. This is a clever feature considering that the new Apple Pencil does not charge when attached to the iPad.

The lower price means that the new Apple Pencil lacks some features that comparable products have, such as pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, and double-tap tool changes. It can be attached magnetically to iPads, including the latest 10th generation version, but does not pair and charge when connected.

The new Apple Pencil is compatible with iPadOS 17 features such as Scribble, Quick Note, and Freeform. It also supports the hover feature available on the M2 iPad Pro, which I personally enjoy.

Apple has a reputation for releasing expensive products. For this reason, the inexpensive Apple Pencil is appreciated. Sure, it's not as feature-rich as the Apple Pencil 2, but it has the core features we've come to expect from the company's stylus.

In particular, the new Apple Pencil fits the 10th-generation iPad better than the original Apple Pencil. We just hope that we don't have to give up pressure sensitivity with this peripheral.

The announcement comes amid rumors that Apple may soon debut a new 11th-generation iPad. The new Apple Pencil is expected to be announced in early November.
