Forget iPhone 15 - the upgrade you really want is coming with iPhone 17

The iPhone 15 made some major changes, but there were also many things we wish Apple had included. one of our major complaints about the non-Pro model of the iPhone 15 is that the screen refresh rate is not smooth at 120Hz or 90Hz, but at 60 Hz. Unfortunately, it appears that this upgrade will not be available for some time.

Display analyst Ross Young posted a roadmap for iPhone displays from 2021 to 2025 on X/Twitter. That roadmap states that there will be no changes to the non-Pro iPhone 16 display, but a 120Hz LTPO display may eventually appear in the 2025 iPhone 17.

However, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may be a bit luckier: Young reports that both models will have larger displays, 6.27 inches and 6.86 inches, respectively. 0.15 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 0.17 inch increase.

We have previously heard this rumor from various sources, including Young himself. At this early stage, however, we do not know how accurate it is. Still, the more we hear this rumor from reliable sources, the more likely it seems that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a larger screen.

Nevertheless, 2025 could be a big year for the entire iPhone lineup. In addition to finally getting a 120 Hz screen, Young predicts that the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus will be larger. They will have the same 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch displays that the Pro models had the previous year.

Perhaps even bigger news is that the Pro model may finally lose much of the bulk associated with Face ID. Young claims that the Face ID sensor will all be hidden under the screen, leaving a single punch hole for the selfie camera.

Young previously predicted this change in April, at the same time claiming that Apple would push the selfie camera under the screen in the iPhone 19 Pro two years later; 2027 is the iPhone's 20th birthday and the 10th anniversary of the iPhone X's launch.

It is fitting, in a way, that it will be the year Apple releases an uninterrupted full-screen iPhone. That is, if what Young says is true and Apple can figure out a way to make the under-display selfie camera not suck. Because the rest of the industry hasn't figured it out yet.
