Forget Google Pixel 8 - Pixel 9 may bring this huge upgrade

Now that the Google Pixel 8 series has arrived, the smartphone leaker community has moved on to look for details on next year's model, the presumed Pixel 9. And earlier this month, a juicy tip came in from reliable tipster Ross Young.

Young, an expert on smartphone display technology, claimed earlier in October that the Pixel 9 series would offer a larger display than the Pixel 8 model. Unfortunately, further details are locked behind a paywall, but he said he may reveal more details in the near future.

Consider what size differences we are likely to see in future Pixels from the Pixel 9: The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 was already smaller than the 6.3-inch Pixel 7, which itself was smaller than the 6.4-inch Pixel 6. Therefore, making the Pixel 9 larger again would be a reversal of Google's direction over the past few years.

Google feels it would be easy to bring the Pixel 9 body back to 6.4 inches since it has offered this size before; instead of scrapping it with a 6.1-inch iPhone 15 or Galaxy S23, it could go with a 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus or 6.6-inch Galaxy S23 Plus, they may even try to draw users away from other large flagship phones like the Galaxy S23 Plus.

The 6.7-inch Pixel 8 Pro is a typical size for a flagship smartphone, so any larger and the Pixel could be too large for current smartphone size preferences. If we were to make a bet, Google would raise the size to 6.8 inches, the same as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the iPhone 16 Ultra is said to be 6.9 inches, and Google may target that size.

Young explained in a tweet that this size increase will also apply to future Pixel a series and Pixel Fold models. Young names the Pixel 9a, which will likely be Google's 2025 mid-priced phone, meaning that the Pixel 8a model has not yet been released. In any case, the current Pixel 7a model is 6.1 inches in size, which means there is plenty of room for growth.

The Pixel Fold has two displays, 5.8" on the outside and 7.6" on the inside. This is a bit smaller than other foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 5, giving Google room to expand things for the next foldable Pixel. However, if that means increasing the overall body size of the Pixel Fold, Google should not make this change; the Pixel Fold has a more compact frame that is more comfortable to open and close than the Z Fold 5.

However, all of these phones are months, if not years, away, so if you're looking to replace your phone soon, it's best not to worry about it now.If you're interested in Google's new phones, see our hands-on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro hands-on articles for more information.
