7 New Paramount Plus Films Scoring 85% or More on Rotten Tomatoes in October 2023

Paramount Plus is adding a lot of new movies every month. Paramount Plus may not be one of the best streaming services, but that's not for lack of great movies.

And this month, there are seven films that are clearly at the top of the list for anyone who uses Paramount Plus to watch. All seven of these options have a critic's score of 85% or higher (the lowest being 88%) on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and all are "Certified Fresh." In other words, whichever of these films you choose, you're getting something worth seeing.

So without further ado, here are the seven new highly rated films coming to Paramount Plus in October 2023.

Arguably one of the greatest films of all time, "Raiders of the Covenant" is no hidden gem. In fact, to not know about the 1981 action film that created not only an incredible franchise but also a cultural phenomenon, it probably needs to be as hidden from the public as Ark of the Covenant.

But in case you've been lost in the desert for thousands of years, let's catch up to speed real quick. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Lawrence Kasdan, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" stars Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Instead, we are treated to 115 action-packed minutes of the search for the greatest treasure mankind has yet hidden. Even if you, like me, have already seen "Raiders of the Lost Ark" hundreds of times, it is worth watching again.

Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors, due in no small part to his impressive range. And "Face/Off" is one of the best films to showcase Nicolas Cage's range, and he and John Travolta must not only play themselves, but each other, in one of the best action films ever made.

In Face/Off, Cage plays criminal Caster Troy and Travolta plays FBI Special Agent Sean Archer. I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that the depths to which these two men try to get the upper hand over their opponents is truly shocking. This John Woo action thriller is one of the most unique action films ever made and is a must-see for action movie fans, Nicolas Cage fans, and John Travolta fans. "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" stars Steve Martin as high-flying advertising executive Neil Page and John Candy as a kind-hearted shower curtain salesman who is good at annoying Neil, John Candy plays Dell Griffiths, a kind-hearted shower curtain salesman who is good at pestering Neil. The two are forced to travel from Wichita, Kansas to Chicago when a snowstorm diverts their flight from New York City. However, Neil is also in a race against time as he tries to get home in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

Fans of comedies will not find anything better than Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It is also one of the best road trip movies ever made, and features Stephen Martin and John Candy together like comedic geniuses at the height of their powers. It's also a John Hughes film, and you won't be surprised to learn that it was one of the highest-rated films on Paramount Plus this month.

I can see why critics have rated "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" higher than "Clerks," but even director Kevin Smith might concede that claim. Frankly, it was one of the films that shaped my youth, and without it, I don't know if I would be as passionate about movies as I am today.

Filmed entirely in black and white, "Clerks," which could be described as a student film, is a brilliantly shot day in the life of two convenience store clerks, Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and Randall Graves (Jeff Anderson). Witty, clever, and very tight, this 92-minute film will have you watching it again after you're done.

I actually first saw "District 9" when I reviewed "Meta Quest 3" a few weeks ago. District 9 is a film about aliens living on Earth, but it is a surprisingly down-to-earth film that delves deeply into xenophobia and social segregation. In fact, the film, directed by South African director Neill Blomkamp, was inspired by actual events in Cape Town's District 6 during the apartheid era. As with apartheid, the rulers in "District 9" are not the good guys. Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) seems well-meaning, but the company he works for is monstrous, and even he cannot escape treating the aliens in District 9 as second-class. A difficult film to watch at times, after watching it you will be surprised that it was nominated for the 82nd Academy Award for Best Picture.

It is very strange that when people talk about the best films of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, an excellent film like "Minority Report" gets passed over. It is even more surprising when one considers that "Minority Report" is based on a novel by Philip K. Dick and is right up there with such beloved films as "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall. But again, when discussing these science fiction classics, "Minority Report" is rarely mentioned in the same breath.

What is stranger than anything else is why. There is really no reason why "Minority Report" should always be left out of these conversations. The film is based on a great premise, with Tom Cruise as John Anderton, head of the Criminal Investigation Division, whose mission is to arrest criminals before they commit crimes. The film also features a stellar cast, including Max von Sydow as Precrime Bureau Chief Lamar Burgess and Colin Farrell as Danny Witwer, an agent with the U.S. Department of Justice. If you want to see an excellent sci-fi thriller this month, look no further than "Minority Report."

If you've seen "John Wick: Chapter Four," "Warriors" will be familiar to you. A Keanu Reeves masterpiece, the film's Parisian chase is also a subtle homage to this 1979 classic. Set in a dystopian New York City, the city is overrun by warring street gangs and violent cops. However, Cyrus (Roger Hill), the leader of the Gramercy Riffs, has united the gangs to take control of the city against the police.

However, like many charismatic revolutionaries, Cyrus is gunned down by someone who deems his ideas too radical. Unfortunately for the Warriors, a gang from Coney Island, they are framed for the murder and must flee back to Coney Island through a sea of hostile gangs bent on revenge.

If you like your action set pieces as finely choreographed as your dance numbers, definitely check out The Warriors. Once you've seen it, be sure to check out our guide to watching John Wick movies in order.
