M3 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air to be released in 2024?

The rumored Apple M3 chip-equipped MacBook Pro laptop will arrive in spring 2024, while the M3 MacBook Air could launch later that same year.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter and Apple informant Mark Gurman states that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips have entered the DVT (design verification testing) phase He stated that the company is now in the DVT (Design Verification Test) phase. Therefore, Gurman believes that these premium Pro laptops could be available "between early 2024 and spring."

Meanwhile, both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air M3 models have reached EVT, or engineering verification testing. If that is true, Gurman says these notebooks are "slated for as early as next spring or summer."

If Gurman's report is accurate, it would suggest a different launch strategy for Macs with M-series chips. In the past, the company has released devices with standard M-series processors, followed by machines with Pro, Max, and Ultra chips. It appears that Apple will now release Macs with the more powerful M3 variants (in this case, the Pro and Max chips), followed by machines with vanilla M3 chips.

Gurman's latest report contradicts his earlier claim that the M3 MacBook will appear in October; given that the MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips was released in January 2023, Gurman states: "October is too early for new high-end MacBook Pros and desktops, so the first beneficiaries of the new chips should be the next iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro." Since we are now past the middle of October, it is highly unlikely that this will happen.

If Gurman's latest claim is true, then the M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro will be released approximately one year after the respective MacBook Pro with M2 is released. Similarly, it seems likely that the rumored M3-equipped 15-inch MacBook Air will appear later than its predecessor - although it will be two years before the 13-inch MacBook Air receives an updated model with the M3 chip. [However, it will be two years before the 13-inch MacBook Air receives an updated model with the M3 chip. We will keep you updated as we hear any news about the M3 Mac.
