Apple could solve the worst of the worst with a new iPhone setup

One of the worst things about the new iPhone experience is having to update iOS to the latest version before you can migrate your data. Apple may soon make that a thing of the past.

According to Apple expert Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, Apple Store employees may soon be equipped with a new "pad-like device" that allows them to update their iPhones without having to remove them from their packaging The pad will force the iPhone to turn on. The pad, he explains, will force the iPhone to turn on, perform the update, and turn off again without direct manipulation.

Apple aims to begin implementing this system by the end of 2023, Garman added. He did not reveal how long this process will take, but it could be substantial, given that Apple Stores are located all over the world.

Software updates for iPhones usually take place out of your sight, such as when the device is charging overnight. This is because the update is necessary if the new iPhone needs to be the same software version as the current iPhone, or if there are bugs in the older version of iOS, as was seen when the iPhone 15 was launched.

Pre-installing the necessary updates makes setup easier for the user, so if it is indeed possible, as Gurman suggests, Apple would be wise to offer this to customers. However, we wonder if this is a permanent Apple Store-only service or if certain approved third-party retailers will also be offered the use of these devices. We also wonder if this technology could be used for iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, etc. in the future.

Right now, buying an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, or any other best iPhone means updating yourself to iOS 17.0.3, no matter which retail store you buy it from. Hopefully Apple will begin introducing this magical iPhone update pad soon so that Black Friday and holiday sale buyers can benefit, or otherwise, in time for the iPhone 16 launch next year.
