The OnePlus 12 could be one of the first big phones of 2024, leapfrogging a new generation of Android phones. And the upgrades rumored so far could set you apart from the Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel you've been wanting.

The current OnePlus 11 is an excellent flagship phone and can still compete with newer devices like the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8. However, with upgrades such as a new brighter display, a better telephoto camera, and the impressive charging and computing performance in the leaks, the OnePlus 12 should be able to compete with these devices and upcoming devices like the Galaxy S24, which will launch around the same time as the new OnePlus OnePlus 12 should be in a better position to compete with these devices and upcoming devices such as the Galaxy S24, which will be released around the same time as the new OnePlus.

We have obtained some detailed renderings of the OnePlus 12 based on leaks, but its design doesn't seem to contain many surprises. Previous versions of the renderings showed a large circular camera block on the back with one of the rear camera apertures square-shaped, suggesting a periscope telephoto camera. It is not certain whether this feature will be included, as recent renderings show a row of three more commonly shaped camera apertures.

The OnePlus 12 will obviously have an IP rating, but its level is unknown. We expect IP68 dust and water resistance, similar to other major flagship smartphones.

The OnePlus 12's display is said to be a 6.8-inch (or 6.7-inch) 120Hz OLED panel with 2,600 nits of brightness. With this brightness, the OnePlus 12 could be one of the brightest phones on the market, surpassing the rumored and confirmed values of rival devices.

OnePlus could also implement 2,160 Hz PWM dimming on the 12's display. This could theoretically be good for power users who want to play videos or have long gaming sessions without feeling the familiar pain behind their eyes, as the system prevents the eyes from tiring quickly when using the phone's screen.

Originally, the OnePlus 12's rear camera was said to feature a 50MP main, 50MP ultra-wide, and 64MP 3x telephoto combo. This was to include a 32MP selfie camera on the front, which would be slightly better than the 50MP main/48MP ultra-wide/32MP 2x telephoto/16MP selfie camera used by the OnePlus 11.

According to these leaked specs, the new OnePlus will increase the resolution of the ultrawide and selfie cameras and increase both the resolution and zoom level of the telephoto camera. According to one rumor, the telephoto lens will be the same as the one on the OnePlus Open, with 64 MP resolution and 3x optical zoom.

However, this may be doubtful, as OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 12 will feature the "new" Sony Lytia camera with the same stacked pixel design as the OnePlus Open. This is supposed to improve brightness and image quality without causing overexposure by capturing more light. Unfortunately, OnePlus has not yet confirmed the specs or resolution.

Another rumor claims that a telephoto camera may be a major focus of the OnePlus 12. It could even be a periscope telephoto camera, the same technology that allows rival smartphones to offer 5x and 10x magnification. The 3x rumor we heard would be a step backward from OnePlus' previous highest magnification, the 3.3x zoom of the OnePlus 10 Pro and earlier OnePlus phones, but we thought the periscope camera would offer a higher magnification than just 3x.

In addition to the basic hardware, it seems certain that OnePlus will receive an endorsement for the OnePlus 12 camera from Swedish camera company Hasselblad. This partnership has been going on for several years and seems to be helping OnePlus bring its photo quality closer to the best camera phones on the market.

To no one's surprise, rumor has it that the OnePlus 12 will have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip inside; OnePlus has always put Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snapdragon chips in its flagships, so Gen 3 is definitely a good bet for next year's other OnePlus has always used Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snapdragon chips in its flagship phones, making the Gen 3 a natural choice that will undoubtedly match many other top Android phones next year.

As for memory, we have heard that there may be a 16GB RAM and 256GB storage variant of the OnePlus 12, but the entry-level model may still only come with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. However, perhaps a new top-end spec with up to 24GB RAM and 1TB storage could be introduced, and if so, the OnePlus 12 would have more memory than basically any other smartphone on the market, with the exception of one or two gaming phones. [Charging speeds are OnePlus' forte, so the rumor that the OnePlus 12 will feature a 5,400 mAh battery and 100W charging fits nicely with the company's "fast and smooth" motto. This was also supported by Chinese regulatory filings.

However, it is questionable whether this maximum charging speed can be obtained in the US market.

Due to different voltages, previous OnePlus phones have offered lower charging speeds to US customers than to customers in other parts of the world. For example, the OnePlus 11 can charge at 100W anywhere outside the U.S. and 80W in the U.S., which is still a faster but inferior standard.

What we would like to see return in the OnePlus 12 is wireless charging, which the OnePlus 11 did not have. Happily, leaked information suggests that the new OnePlus will offer 50W wireless charging.

OnePlus is a key competitor to Samsung, Google, and even Apple when it comes to flagship smartphones, offering users a cheap way to get the best smartphone technology. That said, of all the rumors we've covered here, the one we'd most like to see come to fruition is a price drop.

We are glad that the rest of these claims turn out to be correct as well. By building on the OnePlus 11 by adding a brighter display, better camera, bigger battery, more RAM and storage, the OnePlus 12 will be a spec monster and likely to be one of the best phones you can buy when it arrives.

It is unfortunate that we will have to wait another month or so after the OnePlus 12 is officially announced before it ships overseas from China. However, it will be worth the wait.
