9 movies available for streaming now on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more.

Another weekend has come and gone: what to watch With so many great new choices on Netflix, Disney Plus, and other streaming services, narrowing down the best movies is no mean feat.

So let us do the work for you. With a mix of old and new, there's sure to be something for everyone. With Halloween coming up, it would be a shame not to include a horror film or two. The cult favorite horror film "It Follows" is back on Netflix, and with Michal Keaton's iconic performance in "Beetlejuice" on Max, you can watch something with a little more "creepy atmosphere" and a little less "nightmare fuel."

As for new movies, Tom Cruise is back for another adventure in "Mission: Impossible: The Guts of the Dead": while on Prime Video, Jamie Foxx matches wits in court in the courtroom drama "The Burial."

Here are our top picks for what to watch this weekend on streaming.

Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, cinema's greatest super spy. Hunt and his team, Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), deliver high-octane car chases, daring stunts, and elaborate fight scenes.

This time, the crew crisscrosses the globe in search of two interlocking keys that, when combined, will give them access to a deadly artificial intelligence called "The Entity." Every nation on earth is racing to get their hands on it, including the ghosts of Hunt's past. Sure, the story is on the ridiculous side, but that hardly matters when the film is this entertaining.

From a heart-pounding action thriller to a lively courtroom drama. Jamie Foxx's charisma is on full display in "Burial," in which he plays Willie Gary, a rich and flamboyant Florida lawyer.

In this courtroom drama loosely based on a true story, Willie represents a cash-strapped local business owner (Tommy Lee Jones) of a Mississippi funeral home against the corporate giant Death Care. In addition to the two leads, the film features a top-notch supporting cast, including Journey Smollett as the defense's female opponent and Bill Camp as the corrupt corporate tycoon who threatens the family business. It's a David vs. Goliath crowd-pleaser of the type you've probably already seen, but you may be enthralled by its smart writing and acting.

Available on Prime Video

The musical Beetlejuice may be getting a lot of buzz for unexpected reasons, but Max has Tim Burton's masterpiece in stock just in time for Halloween. But hurry with that: the streaming service will end at the end of October.

Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis play Adam and Barbara Maitland, a recently deceased couple. Charles Dietz (Geoffrey Jones), Delia Dietz (Catherine O'Hara), and Lydia Dietz (Winona Ryder) suddenly move in and turn their home into a pastel nightmare, so they call in Michael Keaton's Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice) and drive them away. Eccentric characters and quirky, gothic visuals have made this spooky comedy a cult classic. And it is definitely worth revisiting during this spooky season.

Before Denis Villeneuve took on "Dune" and "Blade Runner 2049," the master of thrillers had a major success with one of his Hollywood forays: Sicario. This crime thriller stars some of the best actors working today, including Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin, in a gripping drama set amidst the escalating drug war along the US-Mexico border.

After a deadly raid on a Sonora cartel hideout, FBI agent Kate Macer (Blunt) joins a secret government task force led by mysterious CIA agent Matt Graver (Brolin) and Mexican agent Alejandro Gillick (del Toro). As Kate becomes increasingly involved in their dangerous operation to hunt down cartel leaders, she begins to question her own morality and wonders if the ends justify the means.

One of the most acclaimed horror films of the past decade, It Follows returns to Netflix just in time for the spooky season. The setting is simple and terrifying: a supernatural entity obsessively stalks its victims.

But instead of hiding under a bed or lurking in a corner, the monster disguises itself as anyone under the sun and follows them. This creates tension in the film's brilliant wide shots and makes one suspicious of all the background figures. The only way to escape this curse is to have sex with another person and transfer the nightmare, an impossible choice that the protagonist Jay (Maika Monroe) faces.

"It Follows" is also timeless and eerie. The strange technology and gadgets seen throughout the film are placed outside of their realistic place in the timeline, making them feel both familiar and alien at the same time.

Available on Netflix

This modern monster tale features a never-before-seen Nicolas Cage. Nicolas Holt stars as Renfield, the titular character, and a longtime servant to Dracula, played by Cage. He sets out to find a new life outside his master's shadow after centuries of serving the worst boss in history.

Renfield packs the film with well-crafted absurdity and manages to keep it from dragging on, despite its 93-minute running time. Technically, Cage is second fiddle to Renfield, played by Holt, but he bares his fangs, exaggerates, puts on a ridiculous vampire get-up, and easily steals the show in every scene in which he appears.

Available on Prime Video

Emily (Phoebe Daimber) and Luke (Alden Airenreich) are a do-gooder power couple working for the same cutthroat financial firm in New York City. They have just gotten engaged in secret, but when a promotion comes up, it almost causes a rift between the two friends. When personal and professional power begins to move between these two, it is not only their relationship that grows acrimonious, but the true cost of their success is revealed.

Available on Netflix

"Easy A" is a classic teen comedy along with "Mean Girls" and "Clueless". Emma Stone had appeared in several films before starring in "Easy A," but it was this film that catapulted her into an up-and-coming star. Just watching the trailer, it's easy to see why. She is funny, witty, and dominates the screen.

Stone plays Olive Pendergast, a 17-year-old high school girl who, after her little lie about losing her virginity is exposed, embraces her new reputation as the school tramp and the influence it brings. In one scene, she literally wears the scarlet letter, after Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous novel.

Available on Hulu

I'm not usually a fan of science fiction, but "District 9" is an exception. Part of the reason for this is its premise. District 9 is a film about refugee aliens from a dying planet living on Earth, but it is also a surprisingly down-to-earth film that delves deeply into themes of xenophobia and social segregation. Indeed, the film, directed by South African director Neill Blomkamp, is inspired by actual events in Cape Town's District 6 during the apartheid era.

As with apartheid, the rulers in "District 9" are not the good guys. Clumsy bureaucrat Wikus Van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) appears to be a good guy, but the company he works for (a weapons manufacturer tasked with collecting aliens in camps outside the city) is monstrous, and even he is not exempt from treating the aliens in District 9 as second-class citizens. When he is accidentally infected with a mysterious substance that mutates his body, he gains a new perspective.
