DVDs are slowly dying, but Best Buy may make DVDs disappear altogether

If you haven't subscribed to the best streaming service yet, now might be the time: according to multiple sources, Best Buy will be removing Blu-ray and DVD from its stores and online store in 2024.

The rumor was first circulated by The Digital Bits and confirmed in a statement to Variety on Friday: "To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is very different than it was decades ago. This change gives our customers more space and opportunity to explore, discover, and enjoy new and innovative technologies."

The new technology is not only a change in the way we watch movies and TV shows, but also a change in the way we watch movies and TV shows.

This is unfortunately the latest in a string of bad news for DVDs, as Netflix shipped the last DVDs to subscribers of its physical media rental service in September, and in July, Disney announced that after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in Australia announced that it would no longer ship DVDs and Blu-rays.

DVD and Blu-ray movies have been in the limelight for the past few months, but they are not the only physical media to see declining sales.

The agency that tracks physical media sales is the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), whose past several reports indicate that sales are down around 20% annually.

In light of these figures, videodisc sales hovered around $3.29 billion in 2019, but declined to $2.45 billion in 2020 and to $1.97 billion in 2021. According to the latest report, it continues to drop nearly 30% year over year.

In contrast to the decline of physical media, digital sales and subscriptions are on the rise and now account for $9.7 billion in U.S. consumer spending.

In other words, the golden age of DVDs and Blu-rays is over; it is now the age of smart TVs and streaming devices. Thankfully, during Black Friday, you can buy both of these at relatively low prices.
