The OLED MacBook Pro is reportedly on the way, but we'll have to wait a while - here's why.

The big dream feature users are clamoring for in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro is an OLED display. Well, there is good news and bad news. [According to Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants, the good news is that an OLED MacBook Pro is actually in development. However, during a display webinar with Bloomberg's Woo Jin Ho, he revealed that the bad news is that it will be at least three years before these products are available.

With OLED laptops everywhere, why is Apple taking so long to make the jump from LCDs? According to Young, it comes down to the supply chain.

It is going to take several years for Apple's partners to build the capacity to mass produce laptop-sized OLED displays, which is why there are rumors that these new panels will be properly rolled out by 2027 at the latest.

But we won't have to wait too long for Apple's big-screen OLED products, as Young reiterated the rumor that next year's iPad Pro will feature this upgraded panel, foreshadowing for us the possibility of an OLED MacBook. [It's brightness, contrast, and power efficiency. In microlens array panels, billions of tiny convex lenses reduce the amount of internal reflections, so brightness could increase to around 2,100 nits. [This is due to the fact that OLED diodes do not require backlighting. Furthermore, the elimination of the need for a backlight improves power efficiency and lengthens battery life.

This advantage is clear on paper, as are the risks associated with OLEDs, such as OLED burn-in. However, it will take (much) time to see the substantial benefits of this display technology in future MacBook Pro models.
