Prime Day is an annual retail holiday celebrated by Amazon, usually during the month of July. During this 48-hour event, which is open only to Prime members, Amazon offers site-wide discounts on everything from 4K TVs to kitchen appliances. However, Amazon hardware tends to be discounted the most. In fact, aside from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Prime Day is when Amazon devices like Echo speakers, Fire TVs, and Ring security cameras are at their lowest prices. Notably, Amazon held two major retail events last year. Prime Day in the summer and the Prime Early Access sale in October. The latter was not a Prime Day itself offering, but a kick-off event for the holiday shopping season.

The first Prime Day was held in July 2015 as a way to celebrate Amazon's then 20th anniversary Prime membership. Since then, Amazon has celebrated Prime Day every year, usually in July. The overall goal of the event is to encourage more consumers to join Amazon's Prime membership by offering deals.

Amazon is known for offering solid deals during major shopping events, and this year's Prime Day was no exception.

In addition to Amazon hardware, deals were offered on major brands such as Nespresso, Philips, Samsung, iRobot, Lego, Melissa & Doug, and Hasbro. Amazon claims that Prime Day offers the cheapest prices of the year, and in some cases this is certainly true (except on Black Friday, which is a good thing).

Nevertheless, consumers are always advised to exercise caution, as every retailer has bogus deals. Therefore, we recommend using the website CamelCamelCamel to constantly check the prices of deals. The site allows you to track the price history of products sold on Amazon; you can also read our guide to saving money on Amazon using CamelCamelCamel.

Prime Day deals are exclusive to Amazon. However, over the past few years, deals from competing retailers have increased. If you are not a Prime member or do not wish to participate in Prime Day, deals from Best Buy and Walmart are your best bet. Both retailers closely price match many of Amazon's deals and in some cases offer discounts that Amazon does not.

For example, Best Buy's July 4 sale included a great deal on an OLED TV. Currently, Best Buy is offering the LG 48-inch A2 4K OLED TV for $649. This is the least expensive OLED TV we have seen, just $30 off the Black Friday low. This 48-inch model is a Best Buy exclusive, making Best Buy the best retailer if you want a good, inexpensive OLED.

Meanwhile, Walmart tends to offer better deals on Google smart home devices than Amazon. Bottom line: for an alternative Prime Day sale, look to Amazon's biggest competitors.

Price check everything: The number one rule when shopping on Prime Day is to price check what you are about to buy. Checking prices on Prime Day is so easy. We are big fans of CamelCamelCamel is a website that checks prices on millions of products sold on Amazon. The website tracks the lowest prices, so if the product you are looking at was cheaper in March, you can see the price difference. There is also a Chrome extension called Camelizer, which you can install to see the price history of the product at any time. Don't forget that some items cannot be tracked by CamelCamel.

Don't limit yourself to Amazon: This leads me to my second point: Prime Day is a fake retail holiday designed to promote Amazon devices and services. But just as you wouldn't buy your entire wardrobe from one designer, you shouldn't do all your Prime Day shopping on Amazon. Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy are just a handful of competitors that offer their own "Prime Day" sales.

And based on what we saw from these retailers last year, we expect them to once again offer very competitive sales during Prime Day. Conclusion: Amazon does not always offer the best prices.

Take advantage of free credit: Amazon wants you to spend money on Prime Day. But if you don't see an item you want to buy, or if you want to stick to your budget, there's a Prime Day discount you can get right now, because if you spend $10, you'll get a $10 Amazon credit instead.

Be sure to visit Amazon's promo code page as well.

Watch out for shady reviews: in addition to fake deals, shoppers should always be on the lookout for fake reviews; Amazon has removed many fake reviews from its website, but there are so many that it is nearly impossible for Amazon to keep up. That's why we are fans of Fakespot. The site's engine can analyze the quality of reviews on any Amazon page and come up with a letter grade that indicates whether most reviews for that product are fake or real; ReviewMeta is a similar site that looks for suspicious terms and repeated phrases in reviews and determines whether they fail or Pass or Fail.

Don't be afraid to refurbish: Prime Day deals usually do not highlight deals on refurbished items. However, if you want to get the best deal possible, refurbished products may be your best bet; Amazon tends to offer deals on refurbished Apple Watch products, and the Amazon Warehouse website offers used, pre-owned, and opened deals on.
