Pixel 8a renderings reveal minimal design changes - which is a shame

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro may have just appeared, but leaks and rumors about the next phone in the Pixel lineup, the Pixel 8a, have already begun to appear. In fact, we have our first look at what the phone's design will look like, courtesy of OnLeaks and SmartPrix.

These rendered images, not surprisingly, show a 6.1-inch phone that is reminiscent of the Pixel 8. That is, the same full-length camera bar, cutouts for the two camera lenses, and rounded corners that debuted on the rest of the Pixel 8 series.

That said, the bezel at the bottom of the phone does appear to be a bit thicker, but that's the way Google's cheapest Pixel works. This is an inexpensive phone and cannot be expected to include all the high-end bells and whistles of the more expensive Pixel. As such, the design is quite understated.

According to leaks, the Pixel 8a may be slightly smaller than its predecessor: 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9 mm versus 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0 mm for the Pixel 7a. This is not a huge difference, but it does suggest that Google has made the design a bit more compact without losing screen space. In addition to this, the rounded edges probably make the Pixel 7a's case unusable.

It also has the usual hardware: stereo speakers, USB-C port, power and volume buttons on the right side of the phone, and a flat-screen display with a hole-punch camera.

This rendered image is consistent with earlier leaks of photos purported to be of the Pixel 8a that appeared on the web prior to the Pixel 8a's announcement. It has the same rounded edges, basic display, and Pixel camera rubber across the back. These photos also show a blue Pixel 8a with what appears to be a matte back. Given that the matte back is a feature exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, we would not expect to see it on the final Pixel 8a model.

The Google Pixel 8a is traditionally announced at Google I/O in May, so it will be quite some time before we actually see the phone. That said, that's not to say we won't see plenty of leaks and rumors in the coming months; given that benchmarks of the Pixel 8a are already circulating online, there's no telling what else we might see between now and May.
