iPad Air and iPad mini may have OLED displays - but not for 3 years

According to a report from research firm Omdia, the iPad mini and iPad Air could be getting a major upgrade within the next few years. Apple has been aiming for an OLED iPad for some time, and it appears that the two mid-range iPads will enjoy this upgrade in about three years.

According to Omdia, the transition to OLED iPads will begin in 2024 with the first OLED iPad Pro. The company claims that Apple is not yet fully committed and will use this to gauge reaction to the iPad's OLED screens, but that the new displays will likely not be available on the iPad Air and iPad mini until several years after that.

We have been hearing rumors about the possibility of an OLED iPad for some time, but there are conflicting rumors about when such a device might appear. There is now information that the 2024 iPad Pro series, along with many other upgrades, could finally add these screens to Apple's tablets.

Indeed, the changes brought to the iPad Pro 2024 are said to be the biggest revamp the lineup has enjoyed since 2018. Rumored changes include an all-new Magic Keyboard, a 3nm M3 chipset that has yet to debut on the Mac, and an OLED display.

The iPad Pro series currently features a mini LED display, which while a clear improvement over LCD screens, still falls short of OLED. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple insider, the iPad Pro's new OLED panels will be "crisper and brighter" and "reproduce colors more accurately, known for their higher refresh rate. They are not as bright as mini-LEDs, though.

It makes sense for Apple to start this change with the Pro models first. They are premium iPads, with performance that could potentially rival the MacBook, and come with the right price tag. If you are willing to pay such a price, expect to get the best possible features and performance in the process.

Adding an OLED to an iPad Air or iPad mini at exactly the same time would only give one less reason to pay for an iPad Pro. Additionally, if something goes wrong, Apple would have to damage one product, not three. Hence the 2+ year gap in coverage.

Therefore, we can only wait for this rumor to circulate. However, it is good to hear that Apple may finally upgrade the iPad series from LCD screens. Let's hope that the entry-level iPad will also change at some point down the road.
