iOS 17 may be causing iPhone Wi-Fi issues - what we know

There are always problems with new software and iOS 17 is no exception. The latest is an issue with Wi-Fi for those who have upgraded. If you've been feeling a little bad with your internet for the past few weeks, rest assured, you're in good hands.

Readers have told 9to5Mac that they have been plagued with these issues since upgrading to iOS 17 or with the iPhone 15 running the new software right out of the box. Many have reported slow connection speeds, apps not loading content, and problems with web browsing.

Sometimes the problem goes away on its own, but other times the problem persists until you manually disconnect and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network in question. Similar reports have been made on X/Twitter and Reddit.

Apple does not acknowledge the problem; one 9to5Mac reader claims that turning off private relays in iCloud has remedied the issue.

One Twitter user also claims that turning on Wi-Fi Assist solves the problem. However, this probably does not solve the problem, as Wi-Fi Assist relies on cell data to improve the connection.

A Reddit thread documenting this problem claims (near) success by adjusting the Wi-Fi range to 20MHz, 40MHz, 80MHz, and 160MHz. Another user stated that this method kept him connected to Wi-Fi, but that he would occasionally lose data. It was also noted that this workaround may affect connection speeds.

It is not entirely clear how widespread this problem is, but so far a significant number of people seem to be affected. It is hoped that a software update will permanently and quickly resolve this issue. Until that happens, please try these workarounds.

Or, until a permanent solution is found, you may be forced to stick with your cell phone data and ration your megabytes.
