Samsung Galaxy S24 performance may vary by region - unless you make it ultra

Mobile phone enthusiasts who study benchmarks will know that, historically speaking, not all Samsung Galaxy S handsets are created equal. This year's Samsung Galaxy S23 is entirely based on the Qualcomm Snadragon 8 Generation 2, but in the past Samsung has typically opted for its own Exinos chips outside the U.S., with somewhat disappointing results.

According to The Elec, the company plans to return to this strategy, at least partially, with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 series smartphones. According to the report, the S24 and S24 Plus will use either the Exynos 2400 or the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, depending on region, while the flagship S24 Ultra will use the latter in all markets.

If that is correct, Samsung's decision is interesting. On the one hand, it makes sense to put the strongest chipset in the most expensive product, avoiding the annoyance of international buyers who pay too much for weak performance. But on the other hand, it is an implicit admission that Samsung's own chips are not as good as those manufactured by its rivals, which does not look good.

Nevertheless, it is very possible to exaggerate these things, and historically, the differences between Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets at the time were not obvious to most buyers in everyday use, but only in benchmark tests.

And the upcoming Exynos 2400 should be a big leap forward from the 2022 Exynos 2200, with Samsung promising 1.7x overall speed and 14.7x faster AI performance (due to speed and stability issues according to The Elec) Exynos 2300 never saw the light of day, so this improvement is sure to be especially noticeable.

In addition to the new chipset, the regular S24 model is said to have 12GB RAM and a new titanium frame, but the camera layout is nearly identical. The Plus version is also rumored to upgrade the screen resolution to WQHD, making it comparable to the Ultra version.

But that doesn't mean the S24 Ultra will suddenly be worth the additional purchase. Samsung appears to be planning a larger main camera sensor and a new 50MP telephoto lens. And it will still be the only way to get a Galaxy Note-like experience with built-in S-Pen.

The release date is still a ways off, but it could be a little sooner than you think. Samsung is planning a slightly earlier launch this year to combat the iPhone 15, so a January 2024 release is quite possible.
