OnePlus Watch 2 may appear in 2024

The original OnePlus Watch fell a bit short: despite boasting an impressive nine days of battery life, it was more of a fitness tracker than a smartwatch, and its proprietary RTOS software seemed a bit unfinished at launch. Despite a few updates, it has not been updated since early 2022 and was quietly discontinued this year.

In the meantime, OnePlus released the cheaper and squarer OnePlus Nord Watch in India, but there was no sign of the main wearable following up. Until now.

At X, Max Jambor, a trusted leaker and editor of AllAbout Samsung, posted that a round watch will be available in 2024. When one user responded that the first model was "not good," Jambor replied that "the OnePlus Watch 2 will be better."

Hopefully that was inside knowledge rather than blind faith, but even if it was, he did not say. [But Jambor is not the only one predicting that the OnePlus Watch 2 might be on the way. Last month, leaker @realMlgmXyysd posted what he claimed were full specs of the upcoming smartwatch, codenamed "star."

If accurate, the smartwatch is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and BES 2700, with a round face and 466 x 466 resolution. It apparently supports eSIM, has a blood oxygen sensor, barometer, stress sensor, and "fist-clenching gestures."

Leaker suggests this could be either OnePlus or Oppo, depending on the region (the two are owned by the same parent company), but some of the recent Oppo wearables tipped here and seen on the original OnePlus Watch had a square face instead of a round one. realMlgmXyysd said the switch to a round face is because "Google continues to make it difficult for OEMs to make square watches."

This suggests that the OnePlus Watch 2 will drop the unfinished RTOS software in favor of something more familiar. And indeed, according to the spec list, the watch is running ColorOS for Watch 6.0. It is based on Android 11 Go, but probably only in the Chinese version, with the global version using the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor (found in the recently announced Pixel Watch 2)

, suggesting that the Wear OS platform will likely be the platform of choice. Next year, or even sooner if OnePlus decides to release a teaser during the OnePlus Open or OnePlus 12 launch.
