The United States started this Ryder Cup as the favorite to win this biennial competition. However, the U.S. has not won in Europe in the past 30 years, and is struggling once again on European soil.

For the U.S. to win, it would have to overcome a five-point gap on the final day. No team has ever overturned a gap of more than four points. Since the Ryder Cup moved to a five-session format in 1963, the U.S. has only won once in Europe when it was behind at the singles. That was in 1993, when a team led by Tom Watson was trailing by just one point. But if the U.S. team could bring the match to a 14-14 tie, they would retain the Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup consists of 24 matches in three types of match play: foursomes (8 matches), fourballs (8 matches) and singles (12 matches). In match play, the team that wins the most holes wins.

In singles, each player plays against each other in match play format, with the lower score winning that hole.

Foursomes is a format in which teams of two golfers play one ball with two players; one tees off on odd holes and the other tees off on even holes, alternating with their own ball for the remaining holes.

In four-ball, two pairs each play with their own ball, and the better of the pair's score counts as the team score for that hole.

The winners of each of the 28 matches comprising the Ryder Cup receive one point. If a match ends in a half or a tie, each side will receive half the points of that match.

If the Ryder Cup ends in a 14-14 tie, the holders retain the cup. The current holders are the United States.
