Watching the live stream of WWE NXT No Mercy 2023, tonight marks the conclusion of a historic month for WWE, as September saw the Imperium Gunther become the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in history, Becky Lynch become the last title needed to become a Grand Slam Champion won.

The wrestling promotion, owned and operated by the McMahon family since the 1950s, signed a deal to merge with the UFC under the Endeavor banner and become TKO Group Holdings, and as September came to a close, the company was able to celebrate its first premium event under the new ownership, a live event that was the first of many to come. The end of September is approaching, but the company still has one more trick up its sleeve to make history: its first premium live event under the new ownership.

For the first time since 2017, WWE will produce No Mercy on September 30 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield, California. The event resonates with fans not only because of the beloved Nintendo 64 video game that shares its name, but also because of the various groundbreaking moments that have occurred throughout the show's history. But instead of the Raw and SmackDown rosters making an appearance, NXT stars will shine in the revival of this historic affair.

Just as when NXT was the first live show to air on the new WWE Network in 2014, the Black and Gold brand will be the first PLE of the new era. In theater, they say "the show must go on." In wrestling, they say, "the card is subject to change." And the North American title has been in the picture much of late. Initially, Mustafa Ali won the title in a one-on-one match against "Dirty" Dominick Mysterio after competing in a triple threat with the champion and Wes Lee at the Great American Bash. However, as part of the recent takeover by Endeavor, WWE recently made a number of firings, and unfortunately Ali was one of the talents who was fired.

This week on NXT, a new contender was scheduled to be crowned in a triple threat match between Tyler Bate, Axiom, and Dragon Lee. Instead, Trick Williams was inserted into the match to make it a Fatal 4-way. Williams, who also defeated Joe Gary that night, proved he was a major player by winning this match and his title defense at No Mercy. As a member of Judgment Day, he was angered by this because he wanted to be one night away from defending his title. Instead, in addition to facing a new contender, Shawn Michaels used Lee as a special guest referee for the match to reduce the typical amount of interference in Mysterio's matches.

Prior to his challenge for the North American title, "Big Strong Boi" and the masked superhero competed in the NXT Global Heritage Invitational to win the opportunity to face Norm Dar in the NXT Heritage Cup. However, after a grueling round-robin tournament, The Blowing Brutes' Butch defeated Garrus' Joe Coffey in the finals. The "Bruiserweight" now advances to No Mercy for a title match against Dal. Butch will need reinforcements, however, as The Metaphor is sure to be lurking. But instead of seeking assistance from fellow Smackdown superstars Ridge Holland and Sheamus, former British Strong Style partner and longtime friend Tyler Bate will be in Butch's corner. Despite the brand closing last fall, NXT UK is well represented in PLE.

And while every match on the card has high stakes, none are higher for Carmelo Hayes than his NXT Championship match against Illya Dragunov." The "A Champ" has taken on a number of challenges during his reign, but as self-doubt began to creep in, Hayes briefly doubted his ability to beat "The Charger. After all, "The Mad Dragon" has racked up impressive victories during his WWE tenure, including over Wes Lee, Dijak, and the seemingly unbeatable Gunther. Will this finally be an example of Melo making a mistake? It could go either way, but it should be a great match no matter who the winner is.
