Forget OLED TVs - this 100-inch 4K projector will blow gamers away

Watch out OLED TVs, BenQ's new projector is the best gaming TV... No, it could be a projector. Just in time for last weekend's Tokyo Game Show, projector maker BenQ has announced a new series of 4K projectors for gamers. The lineup includes the BenQ X3100i, X500i, and X300G, which offer 100-inch 4K HDR at 60Hz or 1440p@120hz with latency as low as 8.3ms.

The projectors differ primarily in light output (3300 lumens, 2200 lumens, and 2000 lumens, respectively) and size, but the high-end X3100i also offers vertical lens shift and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. the X3100i is the best 2022 successor to the BenQ X3000i, one of the projectors, and it would be great to see this series get a gaming-specific upgrade in 2023.

Both are primarily targeted at gamers, but that doesn't mean you can't stream your favorite shows and movies in between gaming sessions, as this projector comes with a Google-certified smart platform with built-in Netflix.

As for pricing, the X3100i is priced at $2,399, the X500i at $1,699, and the X300G with motorized zoom at $1,799.

Years ago, the answer was always OLEDs; OLEDs have traditionally offered superior contrast due to their pixel-perfect black levels and overall saturation. OLED TVs also had the best connectivity options, such as the latest HDMI ports, at a time when projectors were focused on catching up in terms of resolution.

These days, it is not so clear-cut.

In short, BenQ projectors offer gamers a way to get a huge screen size for about the same price as a 75-inch OLED TV. The projector still requires a bit more work in terms of setup, but brightness and color saturation should be about the same on either device

If you plan to build a home cinema room, or simply want to have a larger screen than a traditional OLED or LED-LCD TV can provide, a projector is the way to go. If you plan to move between apartments over the next few years, an OLED TV is a safer bet, as the setup will be nearly identical in every location.
