iPhone 15 Pro may not be as durable as previous model

If you don't like the thousands of dollars worth of cell phones that torture you right out of the box, look away now.

AppleTrack's Sam Cole flew all the way to Australia to put the brand new iPhone 15 Pro against last year's iPhone 14 Pro in a series of escalating drop tests. While it is difficult to be completely impartial because of the many factors involved, last year's model came out on top in the drop tests.

In fact, after 14 drops, both models were ripped to shreds, but only the iPhone 14 Pro was still usable, while the iPhone 15 Pro's camera casing broke off from the back, leaving the screen permanently in its white half.

It is important to keep perspective. This is a sample of two phones, and drop tests are notoriously difficult to do fairly because phones can be dropped. Even if dropped from the exact same height under the exact same conditions, one might land on the corner and the other on its side. These impacts can make or (literally) break a cell phone screen.

Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 Pro's robust resistance to drops from height is noteworthy, and the structural differences between the two devices may make the newer model more susceptible to damage if you are dexterous with your fingers.

The iPhone 14 Pro's frame is made of stainless steel, while the new model is made of a titanium alloy. This not only makes it lighter, but also more flexible, and the curved edges introduced seem to improve its ability to absorb shock.

In other words, vibrations may be more easily transmitted to other components, like the glass back that cracks relatively early in the video.

However, it is important to note that both models are virtually unharmed in a normal drop from knee or waist height. This is an important detail for most buyers: unless you are ridiculously unlucky, your phone will survive the small bumps of daily use with few scratches.

Still, if you're concerned, getting a high-quality iPhone 15 Pro case is not difficult, and AppleCare Plus provides valuable peace of mind.
