Nine free channels have been added to Sling TV Freestream.

When you think of Sling TV, you probably think of one of the best cable TV alternatives for cord cutters. But it also offers a free streaming service -- and it just got new channels and a new guide.

As reported by Cord Cutters News, Sling TV Freestream has added nine new channels to its 400+ channel lineup: Cook Chop Chat, Hip Hop WE TV, MSG Sportzone, PFL, Quip, Revry Latinx, Sleuth, Supermarket Sweep, and Jamie Oliver Channel became available this week. These channels join HSN and Binge TV, which Sling TV already added earlier this month.

And now, thanks to the revamped Freestream guide, finding these channels is even easier. Previously, the Sling TV Freestream guide was just a long list of channels (h/t Cord Cutters News), which made it difficult to find the right channel if you were only interested in a particular genre. There was a search option, but it meant knowing exactly what you were looking for, rather than scrolling through to see what was being broadcast.

But with the new guide, you can enjoy scrolling within several different categories. When I looked at Freestream, the options were Sports, News, Movies, and Kids, but now you can also browse Report Reality, True Crime, and more.

Personally, the big news for me is that I can filter to browse movies only. Often I am either in the mood to watch a movie or I am not. It is not usually the case that I am browsing TV shows and decide to watch a movie instead. So by putting all the movie channels into browseable categories, it is a lot of wasted scrolling and wasted time removed from watching Freestream.

Free streaming services have distinct drawbacks. And while Sling TV just added a bunch of new channels to Freestream, you're not likely to want to watch any of them.

That is not to say that there is nothing worth watching on Freestream. In fact, it seems to have some perks that other free streaming services don't. After a week of watching only the free streaming service, one writer discovered that he could watch premiere and pilot episodes of new hit TV shows that are usually reserved for paid streaming services. And after browsing, he discovered that the first episode of "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon" is available for free right now.

But when competitors like Roku's The Roku Channel add HBO Max programming and live sports, Sling TV needs to add a little more than the Jamie Oliver Channel to make Freestream a choice. And Sling TV's last batch of free channels didn't excite me much either. I understand that these services rely on having a huge library, but a little more quality and a little less quantity would go a long way. In particular, Freestream is very easy to use with this upgrade.
